Our Darkest Days Signs To Bird Attack Records, Stream First Single "Ceaseless" From Upcoming Album

Our Darkest Days has signed to Bird Attack Records and announced they will be releasing their new album A Common Agony on November 18, 2016.

Vocalist Vince Fournier comments on the signing:

"Two years ago, when we release our first video, Garrett [from Bird Attack Records] approached us to salute us for our work on this track. Time passes, then we met him at the Pouzza Fest in Montreal. The day after our set, Garrett told us that he was interested in getting our next release on Bird Attack Records. We finally arrived at this moment and for us it's huge! It's been over 20 years that we are in different projects, and for us, it's the culmination of a part of our lives. We are proud and super excited to be a part of the Bird Attack family. It's a rad label with an amazing band roster and the BA crew is amazing!"

You can now listen to the first single from the album, titled "Ceaseless," via Bandcamp.

"For us, it was an easy choice. 'Ceaseless' represents Our Darkest Day's every angle - technical guitars, fast pickings, a 'pedal to the metal' beat and melody that stays in your head. To be honest, this is a piece that means a lot to us."

About Our Darkest Days:

Our Darkest Days is a 5-piece Canadian melodic fast punk rock band formed in Quebec City in 2012, by the former members and old friends, singer Vince Fournier, guitarist Dann Greene, followed by guitarist Russ Almond and drummer Matt Leclerc. Bassist Jam Gosselin joined the next year. Most of the members have been around playing punk rock fury for about 20 years, and still keep their flame as strong as always. After years of work, Matt Leclerc has been replaced by new drummer Guillaume Fortin in 2015 who increased the songs speed, and Russ replaced by Claude Plamondon who left in 2016, which the line up has finally been completed by the missing piece of the puzzle John Leblanc, later in the same year.

While working on music, they came to define a unique and original sound that would stand apart among any other bands. However, they have been influenced a lot by the 90s punk rock such as Ignite, Propagandhi, Lagwagon, Good
Riddance, Strung Out etc. Their first demo has been released in 2013, followed by a split in Fall 2014 with Set It Back. They played several shows in the Eastern Canada.

After two years of live performance, they moved forward to a new writing process, and entered in studio for their first full length A Common Agony, with Fréquences Productions (Pierre Lemire & Michael Fontaine) and has been mastered by Daryl Phenneger. The album is fueled with thirteen mindblowing tracks, and a very energic and technical "unleash the beast" sound with fast drums, solid bass and guitar riffs, flawless pickings and solos, powerful and harmonious vocal melodies, many sudden stops, and an instant ear-catching throughout the whole album that leaves you wanting more.

Our Darkest Days is:
Vince Fournier - Vocals
Dan Greene - Guitars & Back Vocals
John Leblanc - Guitars & Back Vocals
Jam Gosselin - Bass & Back Vocals
Guillaume Fortin - Drums

“For the first time in about a decade, we spent the majority of the year off the road and at home in 2015. Even though to most it must have seemed like we were laying low for most of the year, 2015 became a year of constant inspiration and ever evolving scenery and surroundings. There was a refreshing, cooling feeling that came over the task at hand and the craft we've honed. And with 'Nerves' we invite you to dip your toes in the deep end of the pool.” - Chris Cresswell (vocals/guitars)

Over the last several years, The Flatliners have found success through the traditional punk rock, DIY route of nonstop touring and word of mouth promotion that has led to a cult following of fans around the world. With each release the band stays true to form, with an impressive knack for creating punk/rock anthems that exude that punk spirit while maintaining a fresh contemporary edge. The band took a break from relentless touring last year to recharge and become inspired all over again. Now, they return with two new songs on their upcoming EP, Nerves, that will tide fans over until their next full-length and quickly remind them why they followed them in the first place.

The Re-Birth of Sum 41

When I first learned of the news that Deryck Whibley, frontman of Sum 41 was in a coma I broke down and cried. Years of excessive drinking and partying finally caught up to him as he collapsed in his Los Angeles apartment.  After being rushed to the hospital, Whibley was placed into a coma after his liver and kidneys shut down. In a recent article in Rolling Stone, Whibley said the doctors told him, "You're barely hanging on, we'll know in the next few days if you're gonna make it."

For me, Sum 41 has always been "that band." I have all their albums including their greatest hits album 'All the Good Shit,' I have all their EPs, hell I even have a tribute album. To put it lightly, Sum 41 saved my life. When I thought life could not get any worse, when I thought I could not sink any lower, their music was there for me. So you can imagine how I felt when I learned the frontman of a band that helped me through some of the roughest moments of my life was in a coma and on life support.

Then in 2015 at the Alternative Press Music Awards (APMAs), after being on hiatus for the last few years, Sum 41 came on stage to play as a band again with formerly departed guitarist Dave "Brownsound" Baksh as part of the crew again. It was a triumphant return for a band that once stood atop the punk rock world.

Fast forward to the present. Sum 41, fresh of a stint around the United States on Warped Tour are now on a headlining tour for their new album '13 Voices.' I was fortunate enough to photo their set at Warped Tour in Hartford, CT, and then see them live at the House of Blues in Boston on October 11th. I would be lying if I said I wasn't crying while standing inches away from someone who had such an impact on my life. Being able to shoot their set at Warped Tour was a surreal experience.

Their latest album, '13 Voices' is understandably the darkest album the band has written. Focusing on subjects like death, war, and murder, it's quite a change from their pop-punk anthems like 'Fat Lip' and 'In Too Deep.'

When asked about his recovery, Whibley said told Alternative Press in an interview, "There were moments where it certainly felt it was easier to give up and go back to the old ways.  There were moments of being on a tipping point: I can fight harder because it's going to take more than I've already been giving to get better or just say, 'Fuck it,' ... That's what it felt like for the longest time. I had to have a lot of hope that if I just kept pushing, working, fighting, that I'd get there. I've always known I have a pretty strong drive."

After all I've been through, those words really hit home, as does what Whibley told Rolling Stone. "I'm glad I went through something so difficult because it made me a better person. I like where my life is at right now, and it wouldn't be this good without all that bad shit." Amen, brother. Amen.

Interview with Nathan Leigh

If you've forgotten who Nathan Leigh is, take a moment to read our last article on him by clicking here.

Crowdsurf Central: When did you start playing?

Nathan Leigh: I've been recording solo records since I was a kid, but never really took it seriously until 2010. Before that I'd played in various punk and indie bands and those were my focus. Doing my own stuff was just a way to blow off steam more than anything. I do a lot of work as a composer and sound designer for theatre, and in the fall of 2010 I got offered a contract for a play that would have paid really well and opened up some doors. But the play was pretty awful and I really didn't like what it had to say about the world. I didn't want to spend the next 4 months of my life making something that was cynical and mean-spirited and problematic in a whole host of ways. I felt like if I'm going to be broke and tired all the time anyway, I'd rather be broke and tired and make art I'm proud of. So I turned it down and booked myself a solo national tour instead. I've been touring as much as I can ever since. I try to be on the road for about 1/3 of every year.

What has changed since releasing 'A Life In Transit?'

I was going through a pretty major health crisis when I was putting out 'A Life In Transit,' and recovering from that's sort of dominated the last few years. I was about half-way through recording that album the first time my right lung collapsed, and ended up needing surgery after being beaten by the NYPD during an Occupy protest. That whole thing is what "Never Be Normal" is about. So 'A Life In Transit' was created in the middle of this major crisis, and the time since then has been a healing process, you know? Trying to learn to take more time when I need it. I tend to be the kind of person who will have 15 different projects going at once and just push until I break, and now that I know how serious breaking is, I'm trying not to do that so much. It's part of why it's taken so long to make 'Ordinary Eternal Machinery.'

What was the writing process like with 'Ordinary Eternal Machinery?'

Slow! I'm usually a "first draft is the best draft" kind of person, and I've tried to fight that instinct on this one. I started writing the followup pretty much immediately after 'A Life In Transit' came out, and recorded 3 full length albums worth of material. Every time I thought I was done, it was never quite what I wanted to say, so I'd take the best songs and release them as EPs. That was 'Let's Get Lost' and 'Plastic Army Men.' I like to think of an EP as a collection of songs and ideas and a full length album as a statement. I wasn't ready to make a statement. I started working on 'Ordinary Eternal Machinery' in earnest in the summer of 2014. I thought I'd finished it and went on tour for 5 months. When I got back I realized it wasn't done. I'd gotten involved with Black Lives Matter at that point, and it just felt like a collection of songs about how hard touring life is and licking my wounds after a bad breakup were so slight and solipsistic compared to the other stuff going on in the world. So I spent another year re-writing and revising the material and started bringing in other artists to help flesh it out and add new voices to the mix. What started as a solo project turned into this whole orchestra playing in my living room! By the time we finished there were 30 collaborators on the record and like 40 something songs that didn't make the cut.

What can we expect from that album?

I think it's going to be sort of polarizing. I decided pretty early on that I was more interested in making something that people could dive into than something that was shooting for radio appeal. I was thinking a lot about the big concept albums I loved when I was a kid, that I'd just get lost in for weeks and explore every crevice of sound. Early Pink Floyd stuff, Nine Inch Nails, Bowie, and Cursive. And like 'To Pimp A Butterfly' came out while I was working on it and that really became a touch stone during the process. I wanted to try to create something that would give people the same feeling I felt when I was young and would put on headphones and disappear for a while into a record. It's a folk album ultimately, but it's more expansive than what we usually consider folk music There's a lot of found percussion. I've always been into electronic stuff, and I wanted to find a way to make those sounds organically. So when my muffler fell off, I used that on a few songs, and then kept experimenting from there. I also discovered that if you fill a washing machine with nails it sounds awesome, but cats really hate it. I keep a picture of Pete Seeger on my piano at home, and he was kind of my guide while we were recording, but I'm pretty sure he'd take an ax to this record if he were still with us. That's exciting to me. I'd much rather really piss a few people off than be kinda tolerated by everyone.

What was recording/stop motion process like for the "Never Be Normal" music video? How long did it take?

It took about 2 weeks to shoot. John Regan and I had been talking about doing a stop motion project together forever. We went to college together, and we would always bond over our love of like old Ray Harryhausen movies, and this was something we'd always wanted to do. We'd both shot a few little test things on our own but never anything more than a few frames, so this was a pretty major leap for both of us. It takes 4 hours for every 8 seconds we'd shoot. We'd have to plan every step one of the characters would take and then count it out in frames to make sure it looked natural and fluid. There was a lot of watching each other walk or move our arms and counting. But it was important that the video had the spontaneity and joy of like two kids emptying out their toy box and playing war, because that's basically what we were doing, so the hardest part was finding the balance between planning and play. The best moments tended to be the ones we didn't plan out, but kind of came out of something organically. It was definitely a trial by fire, I went in with this attitude of "we're both puppeteers, we've both done some photography, this is basically just slower puppetry meets still photography. How hard can it possibly be?" Well after the 8th hour of trying to get a stuffed penguin to express anger we learned... But it's really lit a fire under us about stop motion. We're working on another short for "Carl Sagan," one of my favorite tracks on the record, that I think is going to be amazing. It's also probably going to take a while.

What was the recording process like with your new album?

I tracked the skeleton of it on my own before I started bringing friends in. Once we narrowed down which songs to keep, I spent 2 months writing out scores for all the strings and horn parts, and looking for ways to connect the songs. I had this idea half way through recording that all the songs should flow seamlessly one into the next, which is really easy to say and really time consuming to pull off, so there was a lot of planning. And math. There was one day I spent in Annapolis sitting on the sidewalk literally trying to solve for X to figure out the right tempo and time signature to transition between a song in 4 and a song in 6 that both had pretty radically different tempos and feels. I wanted to call my 8th grade math teacher and apologize for being that kid who asked "when are we really going to need to know this?" So, uh, stay in school kids! You never know when you're going to need algebra to make a folk record!

We recorded all over the place. About 40% of the recording was in Brooklyn, 40% on Cape Cod, and the rest was wherever we could find a quiet space. We used a lot of theatres. I got really good at setting up and taking down a recording rig and cutting a take before people came back from their dinner breaks. When you've got a 2 hour window to record 2 drum tracks, you learn to be fast. I engineered most of it myself, but I had a few friends in Kalamazoo, New Orleans, and Boston who cut their takes on their own and sent them over, so there's like a big diversity of sound and style.

What else do you want us/the audience to know?

I just opened a play at New York Theatre Workshop called 'Nat Turner In Jerusalem' last night. I did the sound design and created a bunch of these mini-mixtapes for it. It's an amazing and really timely piece, and everyone ought to see it. And I've got an EP / maxi-single for 'Never Be Normal' coming out later this week, so check that out on Bandcamp.

SEAWAY PREMIERES NEW VIDEO FOR “SLAM” AT NOISEY.COM

Canadian rock band Seaway has premiered a new video for their song “Slam” today at Noisey.com. The song is featured on the band’s most recent album, Colour Blind, which is available in Canada via New Damage Records and in the U.S. via Pure Noise Records for purchase at iTunes. The new video comes just days after the band kicked off a North American tour with The Wonder Years and Real Friends. Tickets are on sale now!

“Putting the slam video together was a different process than any video we've done before. If you're unfamiliar with our older stuff, we've generally made our music videos as action packed, off the wall wild as possible (think 90's gushers commercials meets American pie). With “Slam,” we wanted to make the video a bit more mature than what we've done in the past, while still being true to the band. We enlisted the help of our longtime friend Miguel Barbosa (YEAH!Films) to direct the video. He wanted to find a house with some serious character to it and just shoot the hell out of it. The house he landed on was owned by a former Canadian Mob boss (google Paul Volpe) and it probably had more history in it than we could learn in a day. We just tried to emulate the character of the house in our performance. We loaded in our gear, had a drink, and rocked a gig. Hope you enjoy.” - Ryan Locke (vocals)

Seaway’s breakout record Colour Blind, released nearly a year ago this week, was produced by Alan Day of Four Year Strong and Derek Hoffman. Upon release the album quickly gained mass praise from fans and critics with standout tracks like “Slam,” “Freak,” “Stubborn Love,” and “Growing Stale.” The success of the record also has allowed the band to tour consistently over the last year, including co-headlining the Pure Noise Records Tour with Hit The Lights. Now the band will continue their support of Colour Blind with a North American run with The Wonder Years, Real Friends, Knuckle Puck and Moose Blood.

I was already looking forward to this show, seeing as I haven’t had the chance to catch Pierce The Veil live since the “A Flair For The Dramatic” days (which may give away my age a bit), but walking the streets of Manhattan nearing the venue and seeing so many fans scattered across the city—in restaurant windows, subway stations, and street corners—got my excitement up to a whole new level. It was well past the time the doors opened by the time I arrived, and yet the line was still wrapped around the building and down two blocks (and growing). Getting into the venue itself, I felt a welcoming aura of fans of all ages and backgrounds—one of the best parts about attending concerts in New York City in general, but also for a band like Pierce The Veil that have so much to offer to any kind of person.

I Prevail, a band I had only heard of because of the current tour, opened the show. The band had an insane amount of energy from the second they stepped onto the stage to the second they stepped off. There were a decent amount of fans that were shouting out the lyrics right behind me, showing off the following that the band had present at the show that night. The highlight of their set was their two covers: a Taylor Swift crowd-pleaser and a Linkin Park cover that seemed a lot more familiar to the older fans in the crowd much like myself.

Following them came the UK natives in Neck Deep. I was lucky enough to catch them at Warped Tour in 2015 while they were still on the smaller stage, but it was nice to see them playing such a large venue. Originally, I felt that their pop-punk nature would be out of place in the tour line-up, but once they started their first song and the crowd lit up, I knew I was mistaken. What made this band such a sure fit for the tour is their sea of loyal fans, something they have in common with Pierce The Veil. Nonetheless, their upbeat music and lively stage presence made for a great catalyst before the biggest set of the night.

When Neck Deep finished their set and the stage cleared out, a giant white sheet screen dropped from the ceiling with Pierce The Veil’s logo projected onto it, leaving the fans in wild anticipation. Before the set began, a short animation—inspired by the artwork on “Misadventures”—of a spaceship flying through space played. All of a sudden, the screen “cracks” and drops down, revealing a post-apocalyptic stage display with haunting fog and low lights. The band revealed themselves one at a time by popping out of the crashed spaceship set up on stage, wearing space suits and wandering the stage aimlessly. Once the music hit, though, they were more alive and ready than ever. I applaud Pierce The Veil in their creativity and use of the stage—their opening theatrics made the entire set that much more invigorating. Of course, Vic Fuentes’ vocals will always send shivers down my spine like any other fan, but there was something so balanced about the band’s entire performance. Each member had their own energy and presence whether it was bassist Jaime Preciado jumping from the risers, Tony Perry’s electrifying guitar parts, Mike Fuentes egging on the crowd from behind the drumset, or Vic Fuentes’ serenade that everyone naturally sang along with. These guys have come very far and are musical icons within this scene, and they truly deserve the recognition. Whether the fans were singing along to hits like “Caraphernelia” or cheering and waiting for more, the energy level never dropped. If you have been holding out on seeing Pierce The Veil live or—like myself—have not seen them since the Myspace days, do yourself a favor and catch them while you can. This band has mastered the art of live performance and will truly give you a night to remember.

Bandcamp: An Island Among Streams

It seems like music streaming is the way of the future. Spotify, Apple Music, and services like Tidal are quickly becoming the most common way for people to access their music. To be sure, Spotify is extremely convenient, and it's great for listening to ready-made playlists at home, or while working on the computer.

But despite their popularity, and among raging controversies about streaming revenues for artists, Bandcamp has been consistently providing an artist-friendly platform for years. While nowhere near as big as Spotify, Bandcamp still pushes some impressive numbers of its own, even bragging 4.3 million in music/merch sales in 30 days last April.

Unlike Soundcloud or Spotify, Bandcamp allows artists some creative license with their artist pages, and provides infrastructure to help them sell merchandise. None of the streaming sites give musicians that power. Bandcamp also allows for users to stream their music libraries from both their website and their app. The app works just as smoothly as Spotify, and the only function that's missing is an easy way to download the files in your library (hurry up, guys!!).

For me personally, Bandcamp has also given me a modern interface that still allows me to use my Ipod Classic and experience my music without any strings attached. But even more importantly, it has introduced me not only to new bands, but entire new genres of music.

Bandcamp's tool for browsing by genre is one of the best that I've come across, and it makes it easy to browse by genre and discover new types and kinds of music that you may have never heard of. These odd, niche genres have been able to make a home in the Bandcamp community.

Bandcamp has long flown under the radar, but only recently did I begin to notice that it's taken advantage of all the internet has to offer to create a very happy medium between artists and their fans.

If that's not the future of music, I don't know what is.

Count To Ten

Pop/rock band Count To Ten's roots were formed early as childhood friends growing up in Nassau County, LI.  Band members Alex DeSalvo, Dan wolf and Jon Zaitz were exceptionally gifted musicians in their own right but it was a personal tragedy with the loss of a high school friend that was the catalyst for the formation of the band.  Soon after, Count To Ten had met Dan Koshulsky (Drummer)  who became an exceptional addition to the band.

While the Count To Ten was initially a tribute to their late friend, their chemistry quickly became evident.  This was recognized by local club owners and booking agents leading to numerous live performance across Long Island and Manhattan.  Some of these performances include opening up for National acts such as Nine Days at The Paramount in Huntington.  Count To Ten was also hand-picked to perform at LI's Great South Bay Music Festival where they opened up for Taking Back Sunday and Circa Survive.

Count To Ten has been compared to acts such as : All American Rejects, Fall Out Boy, The Maine, Taking Back Sunday and The Script.  The band is currently managed by Airgo Entertainment which is headed by Music Industry  veterans Jimmy Greco (Carlos Santana, Jennifer Lopez), Russ DeSalvo (Celine Dione, Lionel Richie) and Bill Porricelli (Paul Mccartney). Count To Ten will be releasing their single “Neck Deep” in fall of 2016.

Crowdsurf Central: How was the band formed?

Count To Ten started out as three acoustic guitar playing punks in the fall of 2010 after our dear friend passed away.  Losing our friend Brittany brought a lot of our friends together and we started to jam on our favorite tunes to help with the pain.

What music do you have and where can it be found?

At the moment we have acoustic covers available on our youtube page (CountToTenMusic).  We will be releasing our first single "Neck Deep" this fall with our first music video.  We are really happy with the single and can't wait to show it to our fans!

What is your writing process like?

Our writing process starts at a few different places.  When we first started we would usually sit down with acoustics and write together.  Recently we have been starting tracks with no lyric or melody just song structures and writing over the track, we try to do both ways and write as much as possible.

Who are some of your musical inspirations?

Some of our biggest inspirations came from early LI punk such as Taking Back Sunday and Brand New.  We also try to keep our writing in a style of pop such as All American Rejects and All Time Low.

Any wild or funny stories?

We used to always play mini acoustic concerts for the pizza delivery guy or show him the latest thing we are working on to get outside feedback.  He's a solid guy!

Favorite local venue?

Without a doubt our favorite local LI venue is Revolution.  It's a great place for young bands to start at and they always take care of you.  The sound at Revolution is always powerful thanks to their FOH engineer Breezy, he always gets it right.

What's next for Count To Ten?

We don't want to give too much away but the next step for us is the release of our single "Neck Deep" and the music video to follow with a release show.  You can expect an EP in the spring of 2017 and hopefully an east coast tour!

Firestarter

Hailing from Albany, New York, Firestarter is a band to keep an eye out for. As they finish their national tour with Capstan that saw them play 16 different states, we were lucky enough to see them right before they headed out at NHBooking Fest '16 in Derry, New Hampshire. To say we were immediately impressed would be an understatement. The raw power and energy Firestarter brings is impressive. Combine that with amazing musicianship, clean beats and catchy hooks, and you have the potential for something special.

We had the chance to talk with vocalist and guitarist Matt LaPerche about the band, tour, their Warped Tour experience and much more.

Crowdsurf Central: How did the band form?

Matt: The band formed in 2012 after I moved up to the Albany, NY area after parting ways with my previous band. I began to write the songs from our first EP and shortly after found the principle founding members of the band including Matt Bliss, our drummer. We recorded New Beginnings in January of 2013 and haven't looked back since!

Who are some of your musical influences?

We all grew up in the heart of the mid-2000's post-hardcore, screamo, pop-punk bloom and we feel that's heavily reflected in our music. Some of those bands include Bayside, Silverstein, Saosin, Senses Fail, Armor For Sleep, Underoath, and the list could go on.

What is your writing process like?

Normally when it comes to writing, one of the four of us will bring a riff or even a bare bones song and we will start jamming it and build off of it. Once we have the instrumentals at a good point, I start writing vocal melodies and lyrics over it.

What was it like working with Jay Maas while recording 'A Life Inconsistent?'

Working with Jay was an absolute pleasure and such a great experience! Recording with him definitely helped us reach a new place with our writing process and overall sound as a band.

Tell me about your upcoming tour with Capstan.

We are hitting the road for a month across the country which started August 6th in Albany, NY and ends for us September 5th in Buffalo, NY! The tour has been an absolute blast and we couldn't ask for a better bunch of guys to be out with.

What are you looking forward to most?

Capstan just released a fantastic new EP called Cultural Divide and we really look forward to seeing it played live every night!

Is there a specific show/date you're most excited for?

Being back in California is definitely towards the top of the list. We always love going out there and haven't in a year so it was way overdue!

How do you survive tour?/What's in your tour survival kit?

Surviving on tour honestly isn't as hard it seems. Yeah showering can be sparse, but I always make sure to take care of myself as best I can, take a vitamin everyday, eat as healthy as I can (not really), and drink lots and lots of coffee. Coffee is king on the road.

How do you like working with Darth Fader Records?

Working with Craig over at Darth Fader has been great over the last few years! He helped us make having physical copies of our music as well as helped spread the word about the band

What was it like playing Warped Tour?

This was our second time playing Warped as a band, but this time was on main stage and that was absolutely insane to us. Such a great experience, we hope to do it again next year!

What's next for Firestarter?

As I mentioned before, we are currently out on the road with Capstan and once we get home for that, we hit the studio to record our first full length record! Keep an eye out for new music from us soon.

You can check out Firestarter's bandcamp page here.

Stokin' The Neighbors

Stokin’ The Neighbors just dropped their debut album, FEAR and it’s not bad. This album is a DIY punk dream, as they recorded all of it on their own at their houses. While the lyrics can be a little bit hard to distinguish (the audio is a little rough), you can tell that these guys are going to do something cool. I got some early Suicidal Tendencies vibes; especially from songs like ‘Noble Suicide’.

I had the privilege of talking to the drummer Jared Martin and he told me some information about shows, “You can often catch us at the Squashed Warehouse and out at Geno’s and various bars in Portland. We're playing the Upstart Antisocial Campout in NY next weekend”.

I personally haven’t been able to see them but I have a feeling that will change soon; I’m willing to bet these gentlemen put on one hellraiser of a show. You can find their album linked below, and their personal website as well if you want to get to learn more about them!

Straight Jacket Legends

You may not have heard of them, but, the Straight Jacket Legends are a band that are going places, count on it. They have a unique sound, and provide fresh pop punk riffs. We were lucky enough to talk to Jake and Dan, to get to know them (and Dan’s apparently small penis, he wanted you all to know that) and their band.  The gentleman are from Wales, which just is unfair, because the UK has a lot of great new pop punk coming out. They are currently signed to Paper + Plastick Records, and just dropped their debut album ‘Go Bananas’ which is available on iTunes and will be out on 10/19 via TME Records in Japan. Make sure to follow them on their Facebook and Twitter sites. You’ll want to know what these guys are up to.

My favorite song on the album probably has to be, Tell me how  you’re feeling, it’s just a great song to start the album with. Fast paced and the pinnacle of pop punk, it starts off their debut album perfectly.
We of course wanted to know where their orchestra pop punk sound came from, because it’s something we hadn’t heard in pop-punk, and this is what they had to say:

Crowdsurf Central: Where did you guys get the orchestra sound from?
SJL: Dan - Being fans of some classical music, we figured it was a cool thing to add into pop punk.
Jake - Yeah, we listen to a lot of different music. there's always been something beautiful about strings in rock music.

Being from the UK, we wondered if they’d been to the US, or if they planned to come tour here, and we got some good news! No official announcements yet, but, we hope to see these guys stateside soon!

CSC: Have you ever toured in the US?
SJL: Dan - We have never been to the US touring, but we have had some provisional offers already so we are hoping to be there next year.
Jake - We haven’t with SJL but me and Dan have with our old band.

Since we asked the boys some questions about coming to America to tour, we wondered what some of their favorite tour memories were and who they’d like to tour with, and who has the weirdest habits! Get to know the band, that after listening to, you’ll want to see!

CSC: What’s your favorite tour memory/favorite band you’ve toured with?
SJL: Dan - Probably when we did a tour with MC Lars, and after a day or two, we find out that our bus driver was the keyboardist in Cradle Of Filth!
Jake - Hahaha yeah that was awesome. Also some memorable tour moments with Thomas Nicholas Band.

CSC: Which one of you has the weirdest habit/hobby?
SJL: Dan - I collect pictures of disregarded mattresses on the road, no seriously.
Jake - We’ve slept on some pretty questionable mattresses on tour haha

CSC: If you could tour with anyone, alive or dead, who would it be?
SJL: Dan - For me, it would have to be Blink 182!
Jake- Hard question, there's just so many! Would be awesome touring with the bands we grew up with: Goldfinger, MxPx, Less Than Jake etc.

Check out their BandCamp page here.

Trapt - Make America Rock Again

Trapt, the California-based rock band best known for their 2002 hit "Headstrong," is back at it with their seventh studio album "DNA."

The band is currently out on the "Make America Rock Again" tour which will feature other artists who had success in the 2000s. With names like Drowning Pool, Puddle of Mudd, and Saving Abel, this is a tour you do not want to miss.

We had the chance to talk with bassist Pete Charell the new album and "Make America Rock Again Tour."

Crowdsurf Central: Where was the album recorded?

Pete Charell: The Omen Room in Garden Grove, CA

Crowdsurf Central: What was the writing process like?

Pete Charell: We wrote some stuff together and some stuff on our own and then combined forces to create this album.  Mainly, we would have some riffs and ideas that were recorded with programmed drums and then take that into a room and jam it out until it worked.

Crowdsurf Central: How do you maintain such a presence in the scene for so long?

Pete Charell: We still make albums and tour.   Our first single, Headstrong, exploded bigger than we could've ever imagined.  That enabled us to play in front of tons of people and gain a lot of fans.  Since then, we've been able  continue to tour and make albums for our fans and gain new fans along the way.

Crowdsurf Central: What song on DNA is your favorite?

Pete Charell: It's tough to say.  I like different songs on DNA for different reasons.

Crowdsurf Central: How is it having Brendan and Ty in the band?

Pete Charell: Having Ty and Brendan in the band is nice.  They are great at what they do.  Writing and recording with Ty was a big part of what made the sound of DNA.  Ty and I spent the majority of the time in the studio getting guitar and bass tones and coming up with cool overdubs.  Brendan is new to the band as of this tour and killing it.

Crowdsurf Central: The "Make America Rock Again" Tour has begun: What do you looking forward to most when touring? Favorite part about touring? Favorite city to play in?

Pete Charell: The make America rock tour started on August 6th.  My favorite part about touring is playing shows and getting to explore the world.  Certain cities are always fun, like NYC, Chicago etc.  It's also cool to play with other bands that you enjoy watching and hanging out with.

Crowdsurf Central: How do you survive tour?

Pete Charell: I have a ninja watching my back.  "Ninja" is our drum tech.  Having a solid crew helps move the tour along smoothly.  It's good to have people around that you can get along with and have a good time with.  It's also important to keep in touch with family over phone or see them as much as possible.

Be sure to catch Trapt in Portland, ME on September 18th.

The Kimberly Steaks

While the Brexit decision is shaking things up across the pond in the UK there is some good news coming from there if you know where to look.  We were lucky enough to have the Kimberly Steaks, a soon-to-be unhidden gem, answer some questions for us.

You may not have heard of these guys but The Kimberly Steaks are a band we should all be paying attention to. These dudes are from Glasgow, Scotland and got their name from their old drummer’s brother, who came up with it when he was eating a packet of steak & onion chips.

They recently toured with Murderburger on the “Cheap Meat Tour” and just got off tour with Don Blake and The Werecats. They play fast, aggressive music which reminds me a little bit of early Green Day and bands like Direct Hit!  When ask their influences they said, “Musically, we’re probably influenced most by Lookout! Records, stuff that we all listened to when we were younger, like Green Day, MTX, The Queers, The Muffs, Sicko etc. There are a lot of great bands in the UK like Wonk Unit, The Murderburgers and Zatopeks who probably have a big influence on the way we play too. Lyrically, the songs are mostly influenced by living in central Scotland and not having a whole lot to do besides eating crisps and drinking beer most of the time!”

When I asked who had the weirdest habit, they responded by saying, “Tam (bassist) loves to buy two different flavored tubes of Pringles and eat one of each at the same time. People think he’s crazy, but he doesn’t seem to mind, and usually just replies ‘I’m in flavour country.’” (To be completely honest I wish I’d thought of that, it doesn’t sound crazy at all.)

My favorite song of theirs is definitely Ticking Over, off their “Chemical Imbalance” album. It’s quick and just makes you want to mosh. You should definitely go check these guys out and download their music, which is risk free to you as it’s name your price over on BandCamp

We here at Crowdsurf Central hope to see a tour from The Kimberly Steaks over here in the US, and we hope everyone enjoys them as much as we do! Unfortunately for us we may have to wait for the US tour but, some there is some good news. “We just put out a new split 7” with Dead Bars from Seattle on All In Vinyl Records from Birmingham,” they told us. “We’ve recorded a few new songs for compilations. We’re currently writing a new album which should be out early next year if all goes according to plan! As for a US tour, we don’t have anything planned at the moment. We all work and study a lot so barely have time to play as much as we’d like in the UK. Maybe someday though, we’d love to sample the service station crisps (or “chips” as you call them) to see how they compare to ours!”

And as for their thoughts on Brexit, they seem pretty disgruntled and disappointed, because it could possibly negatively affect touring and bands over there. Hopefully it doesn’t, and hopefully it provides for some good material! We are looking forward to seeing what they do next!
