The Menzingers show review

With the crowd already buzzing from energetic sets by Roswell Kid and Jeff Rosenstock, the energy reached a near tipping point when tour manager Scotty Bell  clicked his flashlight on and off and the lights dropped.

Lights dances across the stage and 'Intergalatic' by the Beastie Boys blared from the speakers; The Menzingers always know how to make an entrance.

Like their new album, the show opens with the ripper of a song 'Tellin' Lies.' Greg Barnett's vocals are almost buried by the crowd singing along, "Oh yeah, oh yeah, everything is terrible, buying marijuana makes you feel like a criminal!" Already, people are soaring over the barrier and into the arms of security. "We're going to try and protect you," the head security guard told me before the set, "but if it gets bad, you guys are going to have to bail out of here." That's understandable, but there was no way in hell I was going to leave that photo pit before my three songs were up.

The Menzingers then jumped right into a hit off their album Rented World, playing the fan favorite "I Don't Want to Be an Asshole Anymore" always marked with an asterisk on set lists. Guitarist Tom May, who is always full of energy, was already bouncing around the stage and urging the crowd forward as more people continued to pour over the barrier. Per usual, though, bassist Eric Keen stood stage right swinging his hips with a smile on his face while remaining silent.

Although it felt like I just got there, my time in the photo pit was nearing an end. As the third song started I knew my chance to get the perfect shot was closing. A crowdsurfer nearly kicks me in the back of the head and I quickly move to a new spot in the crowded photo pit. Tom continues to dance across the stage making it harder and harder to snag a decent picture of him. As the crowd belts out the last lines of the chorus security hustles us out of the photo pit, I limp along grasping the stage, I've done all this without my cane and my leg is killing me.

I stand side-stage for the rest of the show, avoiding a majority of the crowd, and only have to deal with the occasional crowdsurfer as they rush past me to get back into the crowd so they can crowdsurf back to the front again. Twice, somebody managed to dash by security to make it on stage and dive out into the crowd, an impressive feat given that you have to run up a staircase to get on stage and then clear the five foot barrier.

The energy really reached it's climax during 'Good Things' which interludes perfectly into 'Burn After Writing,' two hits off of On The Impossible Past, the album that really brought The Menzingers to national attention. Song after song, they played, and the crowd sang along. The atmosphere inside that venue was amazing.

As The Menzingers sang 'Bad Catholics' I knew the show was coming to an end (I had snagged a photo of the set list) but knew there was an encore coming. The song wrapped up and the band dashed off stage, the lights went out, and the crowd was chanting for more. It didn't take long before they came back out and started 'Lookers,' the first single off After The Party. Following that was 'Casey,' a song that Greg *reportedly* stole from a friend. In an interview I did with him in 2013 I asked Greg, "Who's Casey?" and he laughed. "My friend actually wrote that chorus," he said, "And I told him, 'If you don't use that in a song, I will.'" Anyway, the show wrapped up with the fan 'In Remission.' The crowd went wild during the lines, "I've got a winning lotto ticket from the state of Massachusetts tucked in the back of my wallet, I'll cash it when I'm back in Boston."

This time when the lights dimmed, the show was over for real. The lights quickly came back on, house music started playing, and security immediately started hustling the crowd out the door. It was only around 10PM, an early ending for a show, but Royale would be transformed into a nightclub in a under an hour for the crowd that was already lined up outside. It was quite the site to see, a bunch of punks in black tee-shirts and ripped jeans standing side-by-side with girls with horrendously fake tans in their short skirts waiting to get in.

This was my 13th (that's really an estimate) time seeing The Menzingers, so I already knew what to expect at a show. As we were leaving I turned to my friend and asked what she thought. "It's definitely one of the best shows I've been to. You know, you listen to them and they're just great, but seeing them is... it's an experience. You really can't explain it, you just have to do it. They feed off the crowd's energy, and the crowd feeds off that, and it's just a cycle. I'd go again."

Set list:

  • Tellin' Lies
  • I Don't Wanna Be An Asshole Anymore

Side note: The band got the name "The Menzingers" because their band name the phonetic spelling of a German word for “troubadour.” I found this word - minnesänger.

I Prevail fontman bashes venue security

Currently on tour in Australia I Prevail frontman Brian Burkheiser is making CSC headlines again, and again, it's for another Facebook rant. However, both times, we have been on his side.

Last time Brian made headlines he called out everyone who questioned I Prevail's success, this time he's taking on another issue: crowdsurfing.

Image: Facebook

Image: Facebook

Clearly he is upset about security not catching kids who crowdsurf to the front, and some guy who "worked security" wasn't having any of Brian's rant.

Here's my issue with this. EVERY venue in Boston has signs saying that crowdsurfing is not allowed. How many of those venues toss kids for crowdsurfing? ZERO.

Brian responded to the comment saying:

Crowd surfing is a norm at most rock shows now a days and MOST venues allow it. This was one of the many occurrences my band has had where guards stood by the side of the stage and literally watched kids fall to the ground without even moving a step to catch them. Eric Vanlerberghe and I had to hop on the guard rail twice tonight to save people from falling over and dropping 7 feet on to their heads. At the end of the night we both didn't see a young girl surfing(the only one surfing at that time) until the last second and she was volted over the rail and was very close to landing on her neck and suffering a severe injury, luckily she landed on her back from the looks of it and got up with what looked like just a bruise.

Don't kid me wrong, there are TONS of venues with amazing security who I respect immensely, those dudes are the unsung heroes of the show. However I refuse to let venues provide the kids with an unsafe environment by hiring dudes who have no fucking clue what they are doing. I won't let someone suffer a severe injury because of a venues lack of care for the fans.

Exactly. Security is at a show to PROTECT the fans. Letting kids fall on their neck because "crowdsurfing isn't allowed" seems like a bullshit reason for not doing your job. Bands will choose to not return to a venue because of issues like this. It doesn't seem fair to screw the fans twice.

Thank you to all the security guards here in Boston who do their job, and do it well. Thank you for always telling my photographers and I when to expect a busy pit, and thank you for always catching crowdsurfers before they fall on their neck and/or kick me in the back of the head while I'm trying to take photos. Brian's argument is completely valid here

2ND ANNUAL DESERT GENERATOR FESTIVAL WILL REV UP PAPPY & HARRIET’S ON APRIL 8TH

Southern California’s most anticipated music and auto show, DESERT GENERATOR, will return to Pappy & Harriet’s in Pioneertown, CA on April 8th. Produced by Rolling Heavy Magazine, Allnight Allnight and founding Kyuss member Brant Bjork, the festival will expand upon last year’s sold out show to include the popular Rolling Heavy Van Show, which is expected to draw vanners from across the country, and performances by Earthless, Brant Bjork, Orchid, The Shrine and Black Rainbows. Tickets are on sale now here.

Last year thousands of van enthusiasts and rock music fans descended upon Pioneertown, CA to celebrate the first year of one of North America’s only music and custom van events, DESERT GENERATOR. Inspired by the legendary “generator parties” that made famous the seminal desert rock band Kyuss, and the campouts of the historic custom van craze of the 1970’s, DESERT GENERATOR celebrates free spirits, rock and roll, custom vans, fun times & a fat dose of that bitchin American lifestyle that brings this all to a head in the beautiful California desert.

The festivities begin on Friday evening, April 7th with a party called “Stoned & Dusted” that pays tribute to the desert shows of the early 90’s with full band performances by Mario Lalli and his band Yawning Man, Brant Bjork, Nick Oliveri (ex-Queens of the Stone Age, Kyuss) and special guest Sean Wheeler (from Throw Rag) and the mighty Fu Manchu. The event will be held at an undisclosed location in the high desert. A very limited number of tickets will be available through the Desert Generator website. Ticket holders will hang out, break bread and enjoy cold beverages with the bands before the music begins. This once in a lifetime event is the real thing, a party that can only happen with these desert rock legends and only in this desert.

DESERT GENERATOR kicks off on Saturday, April 8th with the Rolling Heavy Van Show taking place between 12:00PM and 4:00PM at the Pioneertown Corrals Campground. Trophies will be awarded to winners in best van categories. There will also be a Riding Easy Records Van Jams Contest and DJ’s spinning classic rock/metal.

The show show continues the night of August 8th with performances by Earthless, Brant Bjork, Orchid, The Shrine and Black Rainbows.

Artwork for this years official DESERT GENERATOR poster was created by legendary artist Dirty Donny who is best known for his work with Metallica, classic black light posters, pinball machines and his recent art book “Pinball Wizards and Blacklight Destroyers.” Pick up a copy of his book now at http://www.jsrdirect.com/webstores/dirtydonny.

Every Time I Die barred from Orlando venue

Yeah, you read that right. For some undisclosed reason Every Time I Die has been barred from playing at House of Blues Orlando. The story unfolded on the band's Twitter feed:

The House Of Blues in Orlando is located in Disney Springs. In 2015, letlive. were barred from playing the same venue.

The venue is located on Disney property which is most likely why this happened. So... maybe don't put a venue that could potentially draw hardcore bands in Disney? Just a thought!

Every Time I Die will be on tour with Taking Back Sunday, Modern Chemistry and All Get Out this summer.

Warped Tour change parent policy (again)

After backlash against a change that would not allow parents of younger Warped attendees in for free (read here), founder Kevin Lyman reversed course.

One parent will now get into Warped Tour free with a child under the age of 16, according to a tweet from founder Kevin Lyman.

The free parent ticket program began in 2015 and continued in 2016. A post on the Warped Tour Facebook last week indicated that the program will be pulled, citing the inclusion of many legacy acts.

Venue Review: House of Blues - Boston

House of Blues - Boston
Boston, MA

Located on Lansdowne Street in the shadow of Fenway Park, the House of Blues is one you must go to if you are to call yourself a true Bostonian.

Like we said in our review of Brighton Music Hall, if you don’t know your way around Boston I’ve got two suggestions: stay out or take public transportation. Use the Kenmore stop on the Green Line (except for E-Line) for the closest T stop to the venue. If you’re coming on the Commuter Rail from Worcester, use the Yawkey stop and you’ll be right around the corner. Parking can be a hassle. With a double decker garage located directly next to the venue you would think parking wouldn’t be a problem. Well, November through April it isn’t. Come baseball season, you better pray the Sox are out of town for your show. On a non-Red Sox gameday, show parking is only $15-20 and easy to find; on gamedays parking can run you anywhere from $40-60 and even more. If you don’t mind a bit of travel around the city then take notes. Park at the Green Street Garage in Cambridge (excellent prices and location - you’ll hear about this garage in another review), jump the Red Line to Park Street where you can catch the Green Line to Kenmore and boom, you’re at Fenway. All in all, it’s less than paying $40 for a spot.

Boston is a great food town, and the Fenway area is loaded with places to eat. Pre-show meals are easy to find, but we always prefer to eat at the House of Blues restaurant. It sure as heck beats standing in line; especially when some shows have lines that (literally) wrap around the block. Hate to do it, but we have to take Red Sox traffic into consideration for this score since concertgoers deal with it for the majority of the year. Location: 7 Accessibility: 9

One of the bigger venues in Boston, the House of Blues can hold 2,500 at it’s max capacity. You’ll rarely see this unless a big name artist is in town. Dropkick Murphys, Sum 41, Green Day, and Four Year Strong are two we can think of immediately. It gets cozy in there, so I hope you don’t like your personal space. Crowd capacity: 10

There isn’t even a need to write anything here. Boston’s House of Blues is a perfect example of what a professionally run venue should. Sound is never, never, never, a problem. Sound quality: 10

With three bars on the first floor, another on the mezzanine, and more drink offers on the third floor, there is no shortage of drink offers at HoB. Whiskey, rum, mixed drinks, beer (good and bad), wine… whatever you want, they’ve got it. And for a good price. Drink offers: 10

The staff and security at House of Blues are some of the best. Getting 2,500 people into a show can be a hassle, especially when you only have two doors to do so. The ticket window works like a well-oiled machine, have your ID ready to go and things will move quickly.  Before doors open staffers walk up and down the line checking IDs and giving those over 21 wristbands. Staff at the doors do a great job of hustling people through in a timely manner once doors open. Security always makes sure crowdsurfers get over the barrier safely and have no problem pulling someone aside if they are being too rough. Even better, they try their best to protect the multitude of photographers behind them who are trying to get the best shot possible. Just make sure you don’t overstay your welcome. Three songs. That’s it. Staff: 10 Security: 10

Like all venues, the bathrooms can get messy during a show, but that’s really the only problem you’ll run into. HoB takes pride in keeping the venue as clean as possible. Cleanliness: 10

Like we said in our review of Brighton Music Hall, bands love coming to Boston. Crowds at House of Blues shows are always, always, always full of energy, it doesn’t matter what kind of show is happening, people will always be smiling. Because of that (and the great capacity) House of Blues can draw some great shows. Expected shows & tours: 10

I’ve always had a good time at House of Blues. Really, the only time I didn’t was because of some drama caused by an ex-girlfriend, and even then my friends kept buying me beers and crowdsurfing me to the front. There’s something special about being one of the first people in the venue, which I’ve been able to do through my job at WAAF. Even when nobody is there, the atmosphere is electric. The hair on the back of your neck stands up, goosebumps run up and down your arms, and your fingertips start to tingle. If you haven’t been to the House of Blues I highly encourage you find a show there soon. Just make sure you know if/when/where the Sox are playing! Driving to the venue during rush hour isn’t terrible, but it’s not great either. Overall experience: 10

Total Score: 96

THE NEARLY DEADS TO RELEASE NEW EP, ANNOUNCE TOUR

THE NEARLY DEADS ANNOUNCE SPRING “BREAK INTO ACTION TOUR” W/EYES SET TO KILL & BAD SEED RISING

EP - ‘REVENGE OF THE NEARLY DEADS,’ DUE OUT MAY 26TH

ashville rock band The Nearly Deads has announced plans to release a brand new EP, Revenge of the Nearly Deads, on May 26th. The band has also announced they’ll be heading out on the “Break Into Action Tour” this spring (April 18-May 25) with Eyes Set To Kill and Bad Seed Rising. Tickets for the tour go on sale March 28th at 10AM PST (Soundrink VIP On-Sale) and March 29th at 10AM Local Time (General On-Sale).

In making their third EP and follow up to their 2014 full-length album Invisible Tonight, the band called on their fans, known as the #zombienation, to help fund the effort via a PledgeMusic campaign that ended up surpassing their goal by 148% in a short amount of time. The band also took this opportunity to help raise awareness about breast cancer, a cause they’re deeply passionate about, and ultimately donated 10% of money raised from the campaign to the Keep A Breast charity.

Led by the inimitable songstress Theresa Jeane, along with Steven Tobi (guitar), Kevin Koelsch (bass), Javier Garza Jr. (guitar) and Josh Perrone (drums), The Nearly Deads blend an amalgam of powerful pop vocals and aggressive alternative rock music to create a truly unique genre that not only gives a nod to gritty grunge, but brings it back in a way never heard before.

Evidence of this musical evolution came to fruition in the form of a breakthrough track called “Never Look Back,” which achieved viral success with a Zombie-infused music video that skyrocketed past 7 million views. The sudden notoriety, helped the band gain a massive amount of new fans from around the world and set the stage to become one of the rock scene’s next break out bands.

“We had a lot of fun making Revenge and hope people have fun rocking out to it. A lot of the songs on this EP focus on themes of moving on, being yourself, and realizing how much better off you can be once you shed the negativity in your life. It's about a mutual understanding between us and the fans that they love us for who we are and we love them right back. We want to remind people they don't have to change for anybody.” - Theresa Jeane (vocals/keys)

“This is going to be our heaviest, most polished, creative and catchy album yet. I'm really excited to share it with all of you and am forever grateful to everyone who pledged to help make this EP possible.” - Steven Tobi (lead guitar)

The Nearly Deads’ upcoming EP, Revenge of The Nearly Deads, reveals the band’s next step toward domination. Armed with unforgettable tracks like “My Evil Ways,” the band showcases a rare, raw talent and continue to forge a new path dotted by passion, charisma, talent, hard work, and messages of positivity and empowerment.

Warped Tour ditches 'parents get in for free' deal

The official Vans Warped Tour page just posted the following:

DO PARENT'S GET IN FOR FREE?
No - unfortunately we are no longer offering the FREE Parent Ticket.
Over 21 years the Warped Tour audience has always been for the counter culture teenager. As our audience grew up and changed and as new fans came to the shows, we've worked hard to adjust with them and continue to keep the tour relevant.
In 2015 and 2016, we tested implementing a "Parent Get's In For Free" program that allowed (1) parent to be admitted to the show for Free if they were bringing a child that had a paid ticket.
Unfortunately in 2017 and moving forward, the tour is "going back to our roots" and with the booking of a more balanced lineup including many legacy acts, we are no longer offering the FREE Parent Ticket.
However, any parents who buys a ticket will still be able to come to our Reverse Daycare Tent where they can hang out, watch TV, and keep an eye on their child.

Well. That's it, we guess.  Be sure to check out that reverse daycare, though. It's usually the only place non-press can go that has air conditioning.

BREAKING: Moose Blood part ways with drummer

Amidst allegations sexual harassment Moose Blood have parted ways with their drummer Glenn Harvey.

Hi everyone
It’s taken a few days to respond to everything that’s circulating online at the moment regarding our band but Glenn Harvey is not currently a member of Moose Blood.
In no way do we support any disrespectful or inappropriate behaviour towards anyone, male or female.
This is not a decision we’ve taken lightly.
We will continue with our North American tour, with the exception of St. Louis tonight, with our good friend on drums.
Moose Blood and our label Hopeless Records will be making a charitable donation to RAINN to show our support and awareness.
We appreciate your patience and your loyalty.

One woman in particular has stepped forward. Harvey allegedly sent unsolicited nude photos and a video to the woman in 2015. She has since posted screen captures of messages her boyfriend sent to Harvey in December 2015 asking him to stop. After attempting to expose this situation in the past, the accusations now are receiving notice online.

Rumors online originally suggested that the woman was underage, but she has since confirmed she was over 18 at the time.

PURE NOISE & SONY MUSIC LAUNCH NEW LABEL - WEEKDAY RECORDS

Announced today, Pasadena based Pure Noise Records’ founder Jake Round has partnered with Sony Music to create a brand new music label called Weekday Records. Established in 2016 as part of the Red Associated Label Group and launching this spring, the new label will focus primarily on the discovery and development of new musical acts outside the realm of the burgeoning punk label Pure Noise Records.

Weekday Records commences with the signings of Alabama pop-alternative band Jule Vera who has debuted a music video for their brand new song “Lifeline” from their full-length record that is due out later this year. The record was produced by Frequency (Misterwives, B.o.B., Eminem/Rihanna). Watch the new video for “Lifeline” here:

Additionally, Weekday Records also welcomes beloved Arizona indie rock band Lydia to their roster, with plans to release their next record later this fall.

“I'm very excited and proud to announce Weekday Records, our new partnership with Sony Music. We'll be signing and developing artists at Weekday in the same way we've done at Pure Noise over the last eight years but will be able to branch out a little bit genre wise, which is exciting. Getting started with great acts like Lydia and Jule Vera is a great representation of what we hope to do with the label stylistically. We hope Weekday can be a good home for everything from indie rock to pop and everything in between.” - Jake Round (Founder/President of Pure Noise Records and Weekday Records)

Venue Review: Brighton Music Hall

Brighton Music Hall
Boston, MA

Located in the busy Allston section of Boston, Brighton Music Hall is a true gem of a venue.

If you don’t know your way around Boston I’ve got two suggestions: stay out or take public transportation. I’m joking… kind of. Parking around the city is very limited, especially in the winter. When you buy a ticket for a show at Brighton Music Hall they give you the opportunity to buy a pass so you can park in the CVS parking lot across the street; do it. They only offer a limited number of passes ($15/each) per show so be sure to pick up your tickets and pass early. Sometimes you will get lucky and find a pass day-of the show, or the attendant will give you an unused pass that was never claimed.

There is no shortage of restaurants and bars in the area, making a pre or post-show meal no problem. Directly across the street from the venue is Tavern In The Square, or “TITS” as some call it. Pricey beers and food, but worth going to. To the right of the venue is a small pizza joint where you can get two large slices and a drink for cheap - but the price does not indicate the quality, it’s some damn good pizza. Location: 9 Accessibility: 7

From the outside the venue doesn’t look to be that big, and compared to others, it isn’t.  With a max capacity of 476 some shows tend to sell out quickly, others not so much. However, the last five or six shows I’ve been to at BMH have sold out, and when there is a capacity crowd, it gets cozy. If you’re not into getting knocked around in the pit I’d recommend standing along the wall. Crowd capacity: 8

Unlike the last venue we reviewed, BMH does not have to worry about outdoor acoustics. I’ve attended shows on both ends of the spectrum here. From Imagine Dragons to I Prevail, Hit the Lights, and more, sound has never been an issue. Sound quality: 10

You’ll never have a problem finding something to drink here. With three full bars, Brighton Music Hall has some of the best drink selections in the city (for a venue). Multiple beers on tap, a plethora of whiskey and other hard liquors, and of course cheap standbys like PBR make deciding what you want to drink the hardest decision of the night. My personal favorite is the special they offer of a PBR and shot of Jameson for about $12. Drink offers: 10

The staff and security at Brighton Music Hall are great. Whether we are conducting an interview  or taking pictures behind the barrier they always look out for us. Sometimes they warn us that it will be an “active barrier” and won’t let us up front to take pictures, but that is completely understandable. They have to look out for the safety of everyone at the show. Staff checking tickets and at will-call are always friendly, and those taking tickets are great. They almost always allow you to hang around after a show to meet the bands, and that’s always a thrill for the fans. Staff: 10 Security: 10

Like all venues, the bathrooms can get messy during a show, but that’s really the only problem you’ll run into. BMH takes pride in keeping the venue as clean as possible. Cleanliness: 10

Bands will often tell you that they love to play in Boston. If you’re a cynic you probably just think they’re blowing smoke up your ass, but anyone who has ever been to a show in Boston knows that the crowd is always full of energy before during and after the show. Because of that bands often mark Boston shows on their calendar because of the special atmosphere the fans create, and the city is a stop on nine of ten tours. Expected shows & tours: 10

Living less than an hour north of Boston provides me the opportunity to drive into the city pretty much whenever I want. Driving to shows can be tricky because you’ll often hit rush hour traffic, but once the show is over driving out of the city is no problem. Whether it was the Pure Noise Tour with Can’t Swim, Seaway, and Hit the Lights, a summer tour with I Prevail, or the annual Dropkick Murphy’s show around St. Patrick’s Day, Brighton Music Hall is always a great experience. One of my favorite venues in the state, I’m always excited to see that a show is coming through BMH. Two nice punk shows, Bowling For Soup (April 6th) and As It Is (April 28th) are coming up. We hope to see you there. Overall experience: 10

Total score: 94

Remember to come back every Monday between 5-6PM for our newest venue review!

A Day To Remember receive key to city

Last night A Day To Remember performed a special hometown show in Ocala, Florida with Wage War.

Mayor Kent Guinn awarded the members of the band on stage with a key to their hometown. "It's a real honor, I'm so proud of these young men and they've made Ocala proud," Mayor Guinn said to the crowd. "I'm proud to have them here tonight. Tonight is truly a day to remember in Ocala."

"We'd like to say thank you to the city of Ocala for putting this on tonight. I'd like to say thank you to every single one of you in the fanbase for making it possible for this to even happen," lead singer Jeremy McKinnon said.  "If you live here or if you're from here support local music. That's the only reason this band exists." - ADTR

THE TRADITIONAL’S NEW EP, ‘THE QUEEN OF HEAVEN,’ IS OUT TODAY!

After much anticipation, Buffalo emo-rock band The Traditional has released their new EP, The Queen of Heaven, with Anchor Eighty Four Records. Fans can purchase the record now at  www.thequeenofheaven.info.

Fans are also invited to stream The Queen of Heaven at Bandcamp.

The Queen of Heaven is a clear testament to the raw talent of The Traditional. Their music exudes maturity and authenticity as they meld elements of alternative rock, emo-rock and punk rock for an enthralling listening experience. Tracks like “Thirty” and “She Don’t Know” capture fans in a whirlwind of emotion and self-reflection as the band tells tales of lost innocence and growing up.

The Traditional, made up of Anthony Musior, Jon Coric (drums, backing vocals) and Mike Bienias (guitar), formed in Buffalo, NY in 2012 and have since become one of the local scene’s fastest rising bands. The Queen of Heaven, their follow up to 2014’s How To Live Without Blood, was produced, engineered and mixed by Jay Zubricky (Pentimento, Every Time I Die, Head North) and mastered by Jesse Cannon (Acceptance, Basement, Saves The Day, Somos).

Fans can catch the band at a handful of album release shows in April. Additional touring is expected to be announced soon.

BLONDER Interview

Earlier in the week, I was reached out to by this band breaking out onto the scene.  They are called BLONDER, and really have an incredible take on modern music.  With influences ranging from classic rock to modern pop, their style is a culmination of all the best parts from the 80’s to now.  I got the opportunity to hear some of their new tracks from their upcoming EP, which will be released for their tour starting April 2nd.  They only have two tracks right now called ‘Lean’ and ‘Talk to Me’ but you can get a good sense of what they are about.  I got to sit down and talk to the creative leader behind BLONDER, Constantine, for a quick interview about the tour and record.

Crowdsurf Central: How did BLONDER come to be? What is the whole story behind BLONDER?

Constantine: Well, I am still working on the story truth be told.  I was writing songs for a different band before, and that band got a record deal.  But once I signed to this label; 300 Entertainment which was founded by Lyor Cohen who had left Warmer Music and looking to build his roster with young new talent, I showed them about 30 or 40 demos and they really loved it.  Which was great for me because I had really been trying to get a record deal and basically they had told me I should scrap this other band.  I mixed and mastered the EP of the other band and 300 essentially said to me that I should look more into the demos I had made. Thus began the extensive process of creating this new record.  I ended up writing a bunch of songs with Aaron Maine from Porches, and also with friends in LA who had wrote songs for Tegan and Sara and Phantogram.  I even got to work with Brian Lee, who’s like a major name in the pop world right now.  So after all this writing I had already mixed and mastered the record, but we didn’t have a band name yet, even with the full record made.  I knew how I wanted the music to sound, and I was super happy with the record, but we still just couldn’t think of a name.

Crowdsurf Central: So then how did you come up with BLONDER?

Constantine: Well it’s funny, I was seeing this girl at the time (actually the whole record is kind of about this girl), but she called me up late one night after drinking a lot with her friends, and she knew I was trying to find a band name. So she calls me and says “Oh my god, I know what you need to name your band. It’s gotta be BLONDER. That’s the coolest band name I’d ever heard of. You HAVE to do that one.” And the funny part is, the name just fits the record so well. When you hear the rest of it you’ll totally understand why the name is what it is. It’s got this romantic narrative, and it’s so shiny and polished and perfect. So that’s the long version.

Crowdsurf Central: That’s perfect haha.  I love hearing about the creation story behind the music, cause everyone’s story is totally different.  And after listening to the singles, ‘Lean’ and ‘Talk to Me’, you can see the pop influence and the indie influence.

Constantine: One of the biggest influences for the tour, merch design, and just band in general, is to be this reference to New Order and Factory Records. If I’m really looking for rock bands that I want to listen to or wrap my head around, that’s my reference point. I feel like they did it in the most unique and intelligent way. I’m very interested in the emotion and execution and making sure it’s done as thorough as possible.

Crowdsurf Central: So then when did you really start writing all this music? You mentioned you came to the label with about 30 or 40 demos, when did that start?

Constantine: It’s been a crazy trip to be honest. So just to put it in perspective, the old track on the record is from back in February of 2014.  And back then I was a totally different person, I was really into like crazy old school rock, which you will hear on the next single coming out.  But you know, like I said, I wrote a bunch of stuff with Aaron Maine, who’s like one of my best friends for years, and we’ve been sharing music over this whole time.  And we tried to make music before, but it just never really worked.  But as we grew and improved in our writing, our styles started to come together, and the music started to make us actually excited. It had that emotion I was looking for.  ‘Lean’ is actually the first song we wrote together.

Crowdsurf Central: But Aaron isn’t part of BLONDER then?

Constantine: No, no, no.  He’s not we just do a lot of collaboration together.  Kind of like what I was talking about before, a lot of how this record came to be was through collaboration.  So I would write with Aaron and some other friends, and then I produced the record with someone else entirely. The way I look at songs, and making the best songs is kind of like a collage.  So if I really love something one person did, or a sound one person had, I’ll try to take that and combine it with something another collaborator may have come up with.  I try not to get attached to particular parts of songs.

Crowdsurf Central: So you like to show the best parts of the different musicians you work with? Like a group effort?

Constantine: Exactly, and I think it’s really helped create the sound of BLONDER. I’m the creative director and executive producer for the whole project.  And it’s crazy how it all morphed into this, because this wasn’t the original concept for the project.  It’s kind of turned into this little “world” with musicians.  If you noticed the social media is all @blonderworld, and I feel like I’m trying to create this little alternate reality you can tap into when you’re listening to the record.

Crowdsurf Central: That’s really cool man, so then what do you guys to for live performing?

Constantine: Honestly it’s a bunch of musicians from my social circle who enjoy the music and like seeing it come to fruition.  I’m the creator from the band, but they are a huge part in bringing it to life, if you will.  I’ll still take suggestions from other people and if it works we use it, but at the end of the day, I’m mostly running the show.

Crowdsurf Central: So then have you toured before this?

Constantine: Yeah I’ve done like a little DIY tour before, but nothing like this.  Where all the venues are 200-300 cap rooms, and it’s all been pretty much organized for me.

Crowdsurf Central: So what would you say you like about having the tour planned out for you?

Constantine: Oh it’s just better in every way. Everything is just more organized, like proper sound checks, the direct support for Methyl Ethel and Wet.  It’s just a larger platform for us to launch off of.  I mean we are playing a seven song set, two of the songs aren’t on the EP, but I feel like this tour is a great way to bring blonderworld to life and give people something to get excited for.

Crowdsurf Central:  So is this tour the farthest you’ve been from home so far?

Constantine:  Oh yeah, this is the first time we’ve performed outside NYC so that in itself is huge for us.

Crowdsurf Central: Is that exciting or scary?

Constantine: Oh exciting for sure. I mean we’ve been prepping so much for this project and this band and I just can’t wait for people to hear it.  Especially to feel the energy from us, and having that resonate with them and really just let people hear the other songs.  It’s going to be great for people to hear 7 BLONDER songs instead of just two.

Crowdsurf Central: Well thank you man I am really looking forwards seeing you guys out on April 18th!

Constantine: Absolutely man, can’t wait.

I also asked Constantine to tell me his favorite joke, to which he linked me to a cartoon from the New Yorker which is shown below.

You can find BLONDER on facebook, twitter, and instagram at @blonderworld, and check out their current releases here on soundcloud (https://soundcloud.com/blonderworld). They will be performing at the Great Scott on April 18th in Allston, so be sure to come out!
