Venue Review: Maine State Pier

Maine State Pier

Portland, Maine

Outdoor venues can be complicated. Some have seating, some don’t, sometimes they have seating depending on the show, others have an awning or covering, many others don’t.

Located on the historic waterfront in Portland, Maine, the Maine State Pier has hosted numerous concerts throughout the years and can draw large names and crowds.

Portland is a tricky city if you don’t know your way around. Much like Boston there are a plethora of one way streets that will have you wondering where the hell to go if you make a few too many wrong turns. Luckily, the Maine State Pier is located on a two way street on the waterfront of Commercial Street. Ocean breezes and the cry of seagulls with the occasional blast of a horn from a fishing boat or cruise ship create for a unique and memorable atmosphere. Seafood resturants and bars line the street on both sides and can offer a nice meal before or after the show. For a true Maine experience we recommend Portland Lobster Company. Craft beers and fresh caught lobster are some of the best in the city. Beer lovers should head towards the opposite end of Commercial Street and tour the Shipyard Brewing Co. headquarters.

Parking is limited in Portland, especially during the summer. All the garages around the city are packed with cars from around the continent (mainly Massachusetts, Quebec, and Ontario). There is a garage spitting distance from the venue but it is almost always full, and quite expensive. We recommend finding a place, any place to park and walking to the venue; it will save time and headaches. Location: 8 Accessibility: 7

The venue is large, they literally placed a stage on the end of the pier and said, “Let’s do this.” Large crowds are no problem here. Crowd capacity: 10

Sound quality is something that is vital to a good show, and many outdoor venues struggle with this due to acoustics. With nothing but wide open space, the sound tech does a great job of creating a nice sound, something many would struggle with in an arena setting. Sound quality: 8

Despite being down the street from a brewery in a town that is overflowing with bars and dives, the drink selection at Maine State Pier is pitiful. Two beers and two choices of wine are all that were available at the last show we attended. What’s worse is they separate those with and without drinks. If you attend the show with someone under 21 and want to have a drink, you’ll have to do that standing by yourself. There is literally a divider between the crowd (cables running from stage to soundboard) that divides the crowd. The biggest problem is that the restrooms are located on the non drinking side, meaning if you need to piss you’d better finish your drink first. Drink offers: 2

Staff and security are what you’d expect at any venue. Full pat-downs and wands/metal detectors at the entrance. Staff is friendly enough to land a good score. Staff: 9 Security: 10

Nobody wants to see a show at a dirty venue. Maine State Pier and their staff do a great job of keeping the venue clean and clear of trash.  Cleanliness: 10

Maine State Pier is large enough to generate enough revenue to draw large bands. For example, last year Flogging Molly was one of the larger acts at MSP. Shows at the venue are limited, but when they do host a show it is worth seeing. Expected shows & tours: 9

My experience at Maine State Pier was less than enjoyable. Living out of state really doesn’t give me the leisure of being able to comfortably drive to and from a show in a day so I booked a hotel room with a friend for the weekend. Walking to the venue from the hotel was no problem, neither was getting in. But once we entered the venue it became complicated. As mentioned before, the venue is split in two between those who are drinking and those who are not. After finally figuring that out and selecting a drink from the minuscule selection my friend and I found a nice spot to stand; close to the front, but not right against the barrier. All was going well right up until the second act took the stage. As mentioned before, Maine State Pier is an open air venue with no cover. The skies opened up and a torrential downpour soaked the everyone in the crowd. My waterproof jacket soaked through, my shoes were ruined, and my jeans had already shrunk one size. Not wanting to get sick I opted to leave halfway through the second performance and head back to the hotel. For a concert I spent nearly $200 on (all expenses included), not being able to watch the headlining act was very disappointing. Overall experience: 3*

I Prevail frontman calls out haters

Yesterday, I Prevail frontman Brian Burkhiser posted a long Facebook status calling out everyone who claims I Prevail "paid" their way to the top:

I love when people talk shit about I Prevail and say we "paid" our way to the top.

So many assholes have no clue how much we have busted our ass to get where we are. After going to college for a semester I decided it wasn't for me and took a leap of faith by forming my own band. I was lucky enough to come across some great fucking dudes and musicians and we decided we would spend the next year writing, recording, and putting together all the pieces it takes to form a successful band.

I worked at Dominos as a delivery driver for 2 years before I Prevail officially launched to pay off studio time, music videos, and gear. A lot of people thought I was crazy at the time, but I didn't care. I spent every single day working on the project and gave up tons of relationships because I wanted it that bad and I knew in order to make my dreams a reality I would have to work on it 24/7 and never stray from the path.

So to anyone who thinks we haven't put in the work, you are highly misinformed. I Prevail is my baby, and it just gets really old seeing the same old people calling us out and saying this whole thing happened due to luck. Sure there was some luck along the way, but don't for a second ever tell me that we haven't worked our asses off to be in the position we are in.

When you were going out and partying, I was sitting in my room writing melodies. When you were lounging playing video games, I was working a 10 hour shift and immediately going to our storage unit to practice afterwards. When you were surfing the web watching pointless youtube videos , I was spending 5 hours a day messaging kids on facebook and twitter asking if they would check out our music.

So instead of talking shit about my band, maybe you should spend some time looking in the mirror and really think about your own endeavors and how much work you've put into it.

EDIT: Fronzilla shared this post and two of the top comments were #1 "They would still be a local band if it weren't for the Taylor Swift cover" and #2 "Didn't pay their way to the top? All I see is your videos marketed on Facebook"

To comment #1...

Never once said the cover didn't help launch us into success.

But so many fucking bands have had covers blow up and then fallen off.

If we had covered 20 songs, I could understand being labeled a "cover band" but we have 1 cover and 20 orginal songs.

Obviously a lot of people like our orginal music. Sure, plenty have found us through the cover, but if they didn't like the music we write we wouldn't be on an almost completely sold out headliner and have a top 5 selling rock album this year.

Keep in mind, our 1st year of touring(when blank space was at it's peak) we were drawing maybe 200 kids a show... 2 years later that number has skyrocketed. I would say thats due to our most recent album, not a cover we released almost 3 years ago.

To comment #2...

Yes because we have reinvested our own money that we've made off this instead of blowing it on dumb stuff.

Most every single band that has made it in the music industry has spent money on marketing their band, whether its for radio campaigns, support tours, or social media advertising. Because in the day and age where there are literally 1000's of bands, it's very difficult to get your music heard.

But for some reason we are always the ones who get called out. At the end of the day, all that matters is if someone likes your music and connects with it, and luckily enough for us, a lot of people have and I'm so grateful for that.

As you can see, he wasn't pleased.

We interviewed Brian over the summer shortly before the bands debut album Lifelines came out. The show was sold out and had some of the best energy we've ever witnessed. Anyone who claims I Prevail paid their way to the top has clearly never seen them live or talked to them in person. They are some of the hardest working guys in the industry. Remember when they were on tour with Neck Deep and their tour bus caught on fire? They didn't call it quits, in fact, they played later that night.

It's all about hustle. If you sit on your ass, nothing's going happen. Success doesn't come in the form of a handout and I Prevail are a prime example of that.

Pick up their album Lifelines today. You won't regret it.

Behind the Wheel: The Life of a Band Driver

We've all had that thought: It must really suck driving everywhere. Sure life on the road is a dream for many, but it's not glamorous, especially when you first start out.

During their US tour last year, Abandoned By Bears had to catch rides with bands in their tour package; a difficult task when other bands had to worry about hauling their own members and gear.

Fast forward to the present day: Abandoned By Bears are on the 'Charm Cities Tour' with Bad Case (formerly known as Bad Case of Big Mouth), and Carousel Kings, who are promoting their new album Charm City. Abandoned By Bears now has their own van AND their driver, a friendly, energetic guy named Dakoda. We met Dakoda at the Charm Cities Tour stop in Manchester, NH and the idea hit us. We always interview bands here at Crowdsurf, but never those behind the scene; those that make the concerts we attend possible. We talked with Dakoda, a former truck driver, about life on the road with Abandoned By Bears and how he ended up as their driver.

Crowdsurf Central: Tell us about yourself.
Well I was born and raised in Texas I had one brother and a father I was close to. I love my mother too but she drives us all nuts. I too play music and have a band back home, but we are currently having all of our personal issues so we'll be back to our old selves as soon as we get everything solved out. For the most part outside of being a musician and a amateur sound tech; I was a normal Texas kid growing up, played football and baseball, didn't exactly like school because of the people around me, but I dealt with it like everyone else does. Went to college a little bit but have yet to finish with a degree. But now I'm here and I've never been happier.

Crowdsurf Central: You said you were a truck driver prior to this. When did you start, and how long did you do that for?
I spent the better part of 2016 being a truck driver. The driving didn't bother me in fact I enjoyed it as well as the sights I saw. I was fired in January of 2017 because of personal issues I had. But I was miserable doing it, not because of the job itself, but the process I had to deal with. Most days to get a trailer to make money I'd spend 30 minutes to 2 hours on hold trying to get work. It drove me insane.

Crowdsurf Central: How did you end up driving for ABB?
Well one their managers at Word Is Bond Inc. made a post about ABB needing a driver and I offered my help. And I kept in constant contact with them, making sure of updates. And they got their visas cleared and I rode the bus to Oklahoma City to pick up a van that didn't work out due to its serious issues. Then rode the bus again up to Philly and flew back to Indianapolis to pick up the van we are in now. Then drove it to pick up the bears in NYC.

Crowdsurf Central: What's it been like so far?
So far they have been a delight to drive around, and we crack up and laugh pretty much constantly. And all the locals I've seen open up for the tour have been amazing.

Crowdsurf Central: I know it's only been a few days, but what's been your favorite show of the tour?
So far hands down even it being freezing cold and a 21+ show, the Portland, Maine date has been my favorite. Friday Night Lites is a band I've been dying to see for a long time and they killed it.

Crowdsurf Central: What's it like driving four Swedish dudes around the country? Give us all the details, no matter how ugly.
Well they've honestly been great, they're probably the most grateful dudes I've ever met. And we all keep a good line of communication so there's no mishaps that could be trouble later. I honestly feel like I annoy them more than I feel like they've annoyed me. Which hasn't happened yet but 5 more weeks in van with them will tell the story.

Crowdsurf Central: Do you normally sleep in the van or have you been able to find places to stay?
So far we've been able to have places to stay every night. But I know once we get to the west coast we may have to sleep in the van a few nights.

Crowdsurf Central: Music of choice while driving?
Music really depends on who's DJ, so far Frederick rides shotgun and plays a good variety of things from pop-punk to hip hop/Rap. But today Max got a hold of the aux and played the most diverse things and even went on a Swedish music Marathon.

Crowdsurf Central: Favorite place to stop while on the road?
So far when there's cheap food, that's my favorite cause ya know. Food is life.

Crowdsurf Central: How do you stay awake? I just don't get it.
I mostly live on coffee and keeping my mind busy. Helps me stay up on the late night drives.

Crowdsurf Central: Favorite & least favorite driving conditions.
I drive in anything, but it's not the conditions that bother me it's really just where we are. As a truck driver I hate driving in California but I have found a new hatred in driving in NYC.

Crowdsurf Central: Longest you've driven without sleeping?
As truck driver, I've driven my full 11 hour clock DOT legally allows me to drive on multiple occasions. And the farthest distance is 710 miles in one day.

Crowdsurf Central: Favorite highway?
As boy from Texas I-30 and I-20 are smooth sailing.

Crowdsurf Central: Favorite part of the country?
Definitely the northwest when it comes to sight seeing. But food wise, the south will always be my home.

Have any questions you think we missed? Let us know! Dakoda and Abandoned By Bears are on tour until April 13th and will be all over the US. Check out the dates below!

There’s a petition to have Simple Plan play the Scooby Doo theme song live

See? We're not screwing with you.

Alix Epstein tweeted Simple Plan and asked if they would play the Scooby Doo theme song at their upcoming show in Philly. The band responded by saying "start a petition and we will consider it."

Given the amount of attention this has attracted over the past few days we think Simple Plan has to do it. Do you agree?

Sign the petition here.

The petition has also gained a lot of attention, especially in the Defend Pop Punk group on Facebook.

VISTA ANNOUNCES THE “WEEKEND WARRIORS” TOUR

“VISTA are holding their own with ease and “Henchmen” is proof of that. The single is a big, anthemic, and energetic testament to what this band is capable of and we expect the potential to continue paying off as their name rises to the top; a beautiful view indeed.” - Substream Magazine

Fresh off the heels of the release of their latest single “Henchmen,” anthem rock band VISTA have announced the first round of dates for their first tour, titled the “Weekend Warriors Tour.” All dates are solely scheduled on weekends, specifically booked to give kids in school a chance to attend shows. The band has been staying busy, recently announcing an acoustic YouTube series titled “The Stripped Sessions,” and is currently in the studio working on their second EP. On the Weekend Warriors run, VISTA will be visiting states such as their home turf on Long Island, all the way down to Virginia, with more dates to be announced.

Coined one of Rock Sound’s “On The Radar” bands just months after their resurrection, the self-described anthem rock band is already making waves in the press and on social media. The powerhouse anthem rock band has continued to spread their infectious energy through their latest single, “Henchmen,” a strong message of unity to anyone who has felt oppressed in modern society. To coincide with the release of “Henchmen,” VISTA recently supported Fueled By Ramen artist Against The Current in New York City, and will be releasing their second EP later this Spring.  The band continues to rise to prominence through their strong presence on both social media and in the press, a compelling image, high-energy live shows, and the use of dueling vocals.

All Time Low Announce Tour

After announcing a new album, All Time Low announced a headlining tour with SWMRS, Night Riots, Waterparks, and The Wrecks.

Frontman Alex Gaskarth talked about their new album last week with the release of their first single, "Dirty Laundry:"

"I think one of the big things as we were working on the record was just pushing ourselves forward. When we put out Don't Panic we hit the reset button on the band, and we started looking at Don't Panic as if it was our first record out of the gate as a more realized version of All Time Low. Then [there was] Future Hearts, and that felt like we started pushing the envelope forward and trying to expand the sound and grow. 'Dirty Laundry' is a continuation of that. It's taking the idea from the last album and continuing to push it forward and explore new things."

Less Than Jake Interview

Ska-punk legends Less Than Jake recently put out a new EP titled Sound The Alarm via Pure Noise Records. This seven track EP is the band's first release in 4 years, since their last record, See The Light, which was released in 2013.

We sent some questions out to Less Than Jake frontman Chris DeMakes, find out what he had to say below!

Crowdsurf Central: How has this tour been so far?

LTJ: It has been crazy and insane with tons of energy each night. Good times!

Crowdsurf Central: Trump is president, and a fair amount of people are uneasy or on edge: What would you say to them?

LTJ: Take two but don't call me in the morning.

Crowdsurf Central: The second track on the album, Whatever The Weather, has a really strong message: “No matter the weather, I’ll never waiver,” Where does it come from?

LTJ: It comes from the power that we all harness from within after about 6 or 7 cocktails.

Crowdsurf Central: What inspired the new material?

LTJ: For the sheer act of creating for creations sake. Basically, we love to write new songs!

Crowdsurf Central: What was the recording process like?

LTJ: Lots of screaming and yelling and an occasional amp blowing up. Other than that it was business as usual.

Crowdsurf Central: How has it been working with Pure Noise?

LTJ: Awesome, we cannot say enough good things about the job you have done so far. They seem to really dig the record too!

Crowdsurf Central: How was it being on Warped Tour 2016?

LTJ: Absolutely amazing, we played our 413th Warped Tour show on that tour. There's not a band that will ever catch up to that.

Crowdsurf Central: You're slated for 'Warped Rewind at Sea,' what are you looking forward to most?

LTJ: Looking out to a bunch of people watching us play that won't remember that they saw us play. It's gonna be a wild one.

Crowdsurf Central: How do you guys have fun when you’re not touring?

LTJ: We prepare for the next tour!

Crowdsurf Central: Who has the most interesting habits?

LTJ: Me. I can fart on command.

Crowdsurf Central: Does pineapple go on pizza?

LTJ: Only if they're paired with anchovies.

Crowdsurf Central: Who would be your ideal tour partner be?

LTJ: Van Halen w/ Gary Cherone
