JOHN FRUM: Mysterious New Project Announced from Current and Former Members of The Dillinger Escape Plan, The Faceless, John Zorn, etc

A Stirring In The Noos Coming this May via Relapse Records

This is February 15, John Frum Day. On this day, cult followers from all over the island of Tanna in the South Pacific nation of Vanuatu come to the village of Lamakara at Sulfa Bay to march, raise their flags and celebrate their esoteric way of life. This is also the day that the patron saints of altered states known as John Frum reveal to the world the first glimpse into their chronicle of auditory disturbances.

Consisting of current and formers members of The Dillinger Escape Plan, The Faceless, John Zorn and many other renowned projects, John Frum have been fermenting their bedeviled broth in the clandestine corners of their collective consciousness since 11.11.11. Like a planchette moved by the presence of subtle energies, John Frum functions as a medium for malefic musings.

Existing at the intersections of perception, superstition, intoxication, ritual, rhetoric, metaphysics and mystical experience, John Frum welcome in the golden age of musical enlightenment with their first manifesto, A Stirring in the Noos. Nearly 6 years in the making, John Frum’s unorthodox debut maneuvers through 40 minutes of darkly psychedelic and meticulously crafted death metal, the backdrop of a bad trip. A Stirring in the Noos is a dismal distillation of oneiric transmissions, an aural reliquary of mis-shapen manifestations, and a totem to modern primitivism in heavy music. A Stirring in the Noos will see it's release this May via Relapse Records.

John Frum borrows its name from a relatively isolated group of natives in the South Pacific islands, known as a Cargo Cult, who first used the alias John Frum as a means to reject European ways, escape oppressive missionaries, and return to their old traditions. The narrative changed, during the war in the 1940s, to reflect their encounters with thousands of American soldiers who spectacularly descended on that region by sea and air with crates of wartime materials dropped from the sky, known as “Cargo.” These events drastically changed the beliefs and lifestyle of the islanders as they took the soldiers and their offerings to be god-like, as they descended from the heavens.

Alt-religious narratives induced by these encounters were incongruent with islanders’ long-held beliefs, yet the natives could not deny the call of the cargo. Attempting to reconcile their existing beliefs with the new understanding of the outside world led to some strange interpretations which evolved into a bizarre narrative about a dark-skinned soldier-deity who resides inside a nearby volcano, and who many believe will one day return, showering them in riches and technology.

Stay tuned for more info and music from John Frum. Read an in-depth account of John Frum Day via The Smithsonian Magazine HERE.

About Fire From The Gods:

Heavy music deserves a heavier message.

That’s what Fire From The Gods deliver on their Rise Records debut, Narrative.

Speaking from a platform cast in heavy metal power, hip-hop consciousness, and even a little reggae spirit, the Austin, TX quintet—AJ Channer [vocals], Jameson Teat [guitar], Drew Walker [guitar], Bonner Baker [bass], and Richard Wicander [drums]—urge for change through conveying a story that’s both personal and universal. That story stems directly from AJ’s life. Born in the Bronx to a single mother of Jamaican descent, he spent his childhood moving between London, New York City, Los Angeles, Norfolk, and even Ghana where he attended middle school. Drawing from this diverse experience, he speaks with unmitigated honesty about the state of the world.

Victory Records to Distribute Wilhelm Records

Lafayette, LA based Wilhelm Records has entered into an exclusive, worldwide music and merchandise distribution agreement with Victory Records. Wilhelm was founded by Dylan Frederick in mid-2015 with the ambition and passion of giving up and coming artists an opportunity to be heard. “Playing in bands over the years, I never thought I’d get too much into this side of the industry.” Frederick mentions, “Having Victory onboard with our future plans is exciting and very surreal. We plan to make our mark by putting out great music by hard working bands with the same vision.”

Wilhelm Records’ has records planned for Hopes On Hold, Postcards From Jane, Mallory Run, American Pastime and Skylines for 2017 with more on the way.

Tony Brummel, Founder of Victory Records said, "Dylan has a fantastic work ethic and reminds me of when I started Victory out of my closet in 1989. He is building his label and has a solid roster of developing bands. As so many labels in the independent community continue to get acquired it is important that we help develop and support those with the courage and passion to start new homes for artists. We have had the pleasure of helping labels like Rise Records, Standby Records and Sumerian get established from their beginnings along with many labels that we currently distribute. The independent fire still burns in many of us and I am glad to have another label join our family.”

Wilhelm joins GMM, ISCREAM, Luxor, Mutant League, Standby, WAT and a number of other labels that Victory provides distribution services for.

Keep Flying Talks 2016 and plans for 2017.

How was the tour/run that ended 2016? What was the most memorable show?

The run was great! We’re still so new but we’re doing well to get people interested. I’m eager to see what happens in the coming year.Off the top of my head, we played a show in tiny and low basement in a random town in Vermont and it was packed out and full of excited kids. Its that kind of thing we live for. On the opposite side of things, we also played a few packed out venues in Stroudsburg PA & Long Island NY, equally wild parties. I like that we can play house shows and club shows. I’m happy to be anywhere that will have us!

Safety Harbor has over 18,000 views on YouTube and over 65,000 on Facebook. What is your reaction to that?

I’m amazed. Its an honor and I’m so glad people are responding so well to our content. When we started this band, we knew creating videos and keeping a stream of content for fans would be an important part of our plan and I’m so glad its working! It’s alive!

Keep Flying work ethic is unmatched. Where do you find the passion and drive to relentlessly tour and promote your band?

I was taught at a young age that if you’re going to do something “Do it good," as my Dad would say, meaning don’t half ass it. If I’m gonna pursue this, I’m gonna exhaust all options and power I have, and the same goes for my band. As for me, I don’t like a lot of things in this world but I love performing and I love sharing my music with people, and I’ll work to make sure I can keep doing this for as long as I can.

A few band members seem to be involved in some kind of music related activity outside of Keep Flying?

band, does that help or hurt the band? Does it interfere in any way? I think it helps. Although we work at this at all cylinders, i learned its important to participate in other things and focus energies in other places when appropriate. It can interfere a little but I’ve also learned it helps to be amenable to everyone’s lives. Makes for a closer and more understanding group of bandmates.

You released a music video on January 1st - what has been the general reaction to it?

Very positive! As i said, we’re striving to keep videos coming. This video is different from the last one. The last one (Safety Harbor) was more a narrative. This one (Pink Cloud 9) was a compilation of live performances, showing off our energy and mostly our goofiness. The reaction has been great. It feels really good!

What's the plan for Keep Flying in 2017?

We just finished up tracking our 2nd EP! I don’t have a projected release date but we can’t wait to show folks these new tunes. To that end, we’ll be out touring most of the year and shooting more videos. Just plugging along as usual, having a blast!

WSTR - Pop-Punk's Next Big Thing

We had the chance to talk with WSTR, an up and coming pop-punk band from Liverpool, UK. Made up of  Sammy Clifford (vocals), Kieren Alder (guitar), Danny Swift (guitar) and Alex Tobijanski (bass) they are primed to take the world by storm.

Their debut album Red, Green or Inbetween, was just released on January 20th, and has found immediate success. Their EP Skrwd which was released in catapulted them into the punk scene and they haven't looked back. Currently out on tour with Seaway and The Gospel Youth, WSTR will see much of the UK with stops in Southampton, Glasgow, Manchester, and ending in London.

Crowdsurf Central: How does it feel to release Red, Green or Inbetween?

WSTR: We recorded it this time last year so it feels great to finally get it out there. We're really happy with the record and the reactions so far have been beyond expectation so we're stoked.

Where was the album recorded?

The recording process was pretty DIY. Everything but the vocals were recorded in Sammy's bedroom. Vocals were recorded by Seb Barlow and he took everything we did at Sammy's and did his thing with the mix.

What was the writing and recording process like?

I live quite far from everyone so we don't get the chance to write all the time but there was a period of about four month after the EP was released where I'd drive up to Liverpool every weekend to write and demo songs with Sammy. There were a few songs that were half written that we took to Seb during pre-production and finished them off there.

What has it been like working with No Sleep Records?

It's been cool! They've really given us a head start that we could never have expected so we're extremely thankful for that. We wouldn't be where we are right now without them!

You tour with Seaway and The Gospel Youth just started, how have the first few dates been?

We've only played one night so far and it was sold out! We couldn't have asked for a better way to start the tour. The new songs seemed to go down alright too!

Which bandmate has the weirdest habit?

Swifty requests cat food on our rider. He actually enjoys the taste of it for some reason.

What do you have say to those who say your sound is too similar to Neck Deep?

Yawn.

You're just starting out, but if you could tour with any band, which group would you tour with and where would you go?

It's gotta be blink. I've dreamed of playing with blink for years, let's be honest who hasn't? It'll probably never happen but that would be unreal. I'm gonna be boring and say I'd tour the UK with them just because the venues are so big here.

Settle the debate for everyone. How is "WSTR" pronounced?

Waster

If ever there was a time for a true global resurgence of punk rock, that time would be now. As the current wave of pop nostalgia wears off and more and more forward-thinking, liberal, young creatives wake up to a very different, and altogether darker, political, social, and environmental reality, people will be searching for a sound to define their time. Darko's new album, Bonsai Mammoth, will be there waiting.

Echoing the intensity of their music, the subject matter of the Guildford, UK skate-punks’ new record suitably shines a light on the big issues we all currently face, and encapsulates all of the modern age frustrations that are now ripe for exploitation by our best and brightest punk bands. This time around, the band have taken a step back from the narrative weaved through earlier EPs to focus inwardly on more personal subject matter, although they aren’t ruling out returning to their familiar concept-style records any time soon.

Hitting the studio with a whole new perspective Darko worked with producer Daly George (Creeper, Milk Teeth, Giants), who helped them navigate through their new approach to song-writing and to experiment with new sounds and ideas. The final touches were provided in the mastering process by Brad Boatright at Audiosiege (Iron Reagan, Poison Idea, Stranger Things).

“We felt a lot more relaxed recording this album compared to last EP's and hopefully that comes across,” explains guitarist Chris Brown “It certainly made things run smoother for me. We also had more time to mess about with sounds and effects that we don't normally do, as well as giving me time to work on my right-hand technique for the technical sections.”

On the new album, Darko’s signature duelling guitar engines increased the intensity and intricacy of their playing once more. Out to prove that the band are not just a speed-driven, one-trick pony, they’re intent on proving themselves to be musicians skilled enough to make layers of mind-bending, racing guitars mesh cohesively with impactful songwriting.

Couple that with their versatile rhythm section rumbling along at a heart-racing pace, and front man Dan Smith’s vocals stretching to their limit with a coarse delivery, it’s an album that’s packed full of all the satisfying choruses, mosh-pit moments and gang-vocal sing-a-longs that you’d expect from a fun-filled Darko live performance.

With musical salutes to riff-thrashers like Protest The Hero, straight-up skate punk legends Strung Out and the melodic hardcore of Comeback Kid, Bonsai Mammoth delivers wholeheartedly and shows a real progression to the band’s sound, a continuation of a journey this band of DIY brothers are only just beginning.

They’ve refined their sound, toured worldwide and grown a frenzied fan base, and whilst the positive moments might have been punctured by recent world events, disrupted by dark politics and tinged with a forbidding sense of general unease, this record serves as an audible barometer for exactly what’s going on right now in our troubled world. This era and this album combine to create the perfect coming of age conditions for Darko’s particular brand of punk, but maybe also just for punk in general.

Pure Noise Records Continues to Grow

On January 6, 2017, it was announced that California-hardcore group First Blood had signed to the Pure Noise Records roster. First Blood is among a number of other groups that Pure Noise has signed in the last few years with long back catalogs, as opposed to being a new act.

Pure Noise, based out of California, is known for being the start up label for successful pop-punk acts including The Story So Far, Handguns, Like Pacific and State Champs whose popularity has exploded. In 2016 State Champs not only drew some of the largest crowds at Warped Tour, but also  went on a world tour that included stops in Australia, Japan, and the UK.

In more recent years, Pure Noise has signed on veteran groups including Four Year Strong, Less Than Jake, Terror, Hit the Lights, and most recently First Blood; all whom have a long back catalog of music released through other labels.

Amidst their signing, Less Than Jake wrote:

"Watching Pure Noise work hard over the years and maneuver through the modern music industry should be a lesson for any labels that are just starting out. Couple that with how much they understand the history of LTJ, that they have favorite songs by the band, and understand where we are right now in our career, makes Pure Noise a perfect place for LTJ and the new release.”

Less Than Jake's EP Sound The Alarm is due out February 3rd. Listen to "Whatever The Weather" below:

LTJ are not alone in praising the label in the announcement phases of these groups signings.

Terror vocalist Scott Vogel says:

“After a great run of releasing records with Century Media and Victory for the last 10 years, it’s exciting to find a fresh, new home for Terror. We are humbled to still be a band with a lot of love and support around the world, and Pure Noise Records is exactly who we wanted to work with for our future. We look forward to the next chapter in this wild ride and couldn’t be happier to be doing it together with Jake (Founder of Pure Noise Records).”

The band is expected to release an EP later this year.

First Blood is expected to release their next album Rules on February 10th, you can watch the band’s pummeling video for the new song “Rules of Life” below:

This recent turn of events is interesting and noteworthy for multiple reasons. Pure Noise is a prominent and a growing record label in the pop-punk/alternative scene; with a label known for the success of its new groups and exposure to the scene, it can only benefit the efforts of groups such as these to remain a mainstay in the world of music.

Jake Round, founder of Pure Noise Records, wrote via email that the thought process in signing these groups was simply as followed, “These are all great bands that needed a label and we thought we could do a good job for them.” On keeping with this pattern, Round wrote “In the future, we will be the same as it’s always been. We sign bands we like and work hard for them.”

The big talk around here is the Four Year Strong's 10 Year Anniversary Tour for Rise or Die Trying. The band has scheduled three New England shows: March 10th at The Met in Providence, RI; and March 11-12 at Brighton Music Hall in Boston. One show has already sold out and the others only have a few tickets remaining.

With such a wide range of bands on the label, Pure Noise Records looks forward to continuing to expand their roster.

SEEKER 2017 TOUR DATES ANNOUNCED ACROSS US & CANADA With Support From The Grindmother, Cognitive and Wvrm

Since the release of their critically acclaimed album Loss, the nihilistic metal assailants known as SEEKER have not halted the brakes behind support of “one of the most aggressive albums of the year,” as described by metal pundits Aardschok Magazine. Following a December headlining tour, SEEKER has now unveiled plans for 2017, including US and Canadian tours with The Grindmother and Psycroptic, and a stop at the Modified Ghost Fest in Vancouver.

"We're beyond pumped for our February headliner with The Grindmother, Cognitive, and Wvrm,” states vocalist/bassist Bryce Lucien. “Every band on this tour is absolutely vicious and the shows are going to be ridiculously intense. We're ready to grind our way up the East Coast with this gang and hit some towns that we haven't played in a long time. Shortly after, we cannot wait to do our first full Canadian tour with our friends in Psycroptic. Joining us on that will be Archspire and Visceral Disgorge, so you know every night will be crushing. 2017 is shaping up to be the best year of touring that we've ever done. We’ve got a few other tricks up our sleeve which we’ll announce very soon. Prepare for impact!”

SEEKER has released three videos from the album, “Submit,” “Void” and title-track “Loss.”

Loss was recorded by Zach Ohren, known for his work with Chelsea Grin and Fallujah, and the artwork comes in the form of a hand drawn, custom piece by Farron Loathing (Nails, Huntress). Lucien explains, “We've spent nearly three years working on this album and can't wait for everyone to hear it. This is the fastest and most chaotic music that we've ever written.”

VISTA to Release New Single "Henchmen" January 13th

  • In March of 2016 we talked with up and coming band VISTA before the release of their debut EP "VERSUS," you can read that article here. Since then the band's popularity has grown and we had the chance to catch up with them before the release of their next single "Henchmen."

VISTA is:

  • Hope Vista: Lead vocals/guitar
  • Greg Almeida: Guitar
  • Matther Vlossak: Drums

Crowdsurf Central: How did fans respond to your EP 'VERSUS'?
Hope: I think the response was pretty good! I was happy with it. It was a pretty rushed process, but you learn a ton with each release and the fact that it was received well as a new band has been a super great thing to expand on.

Crowdsurf Central: What inspired the slightly heavier sound in "Henchmen?"
Hope: I think collectively we all thought that “On The Brink” and “Mansions” were the two strongest songs on “VERSUS,” so I personally wanted to take the dark undertone of “Mansions” and kind of smash it together with “On The Brink,” which was written to define VISTA’s sound as anthem rock. So we’ve just been exploring different grounds as to what that genre means and how we can explain it to people when they ask. We’re constantly exploring, experimenting!
Greg: Honestly, it just got a tad heavier naturally. The lyrics Hope came up with at first kinda catered to that. Then we just took them and applied it. Other songs could be softer, who knows.

Crowdsurf Central What are you looking forward to most about opening for Against the Current?
Hope: To be honest, I’m completely terrified. I’ve been so nervous and just anxious every day since we found out about the show. But I’m just going to use that nervous energy and throw it into our set. I’m stoked to potentially expand our audience, play with such a sick lineup, and have this opportunity right in front of us. It’s gonna be sick.
Greg: Stoked to hang and hopefully make some new fans. And to come off stage sweating and feeling like we did good as a band. Stoked to meet everybody!
Matt: Jeez. Just having the blessing to open for ATC, a band I've admired for awhile and always wanted to see them live. The fans have wanted it for so long too which is weird since our band's are so diff. It won't hit me until seconds before we play and I'm on stage putting my in ears in.

Crowdsurf Central: As an opening band, what do you do (either individually or as a band) to get the crowd hyped up?
Hope: We all have a ton of energy on stage and just feed off of that natural high. We’ve been an opening band before, so we understand what that entails and know that we have to work 10x harder than the last time to really pull the crowd in and get those audience members to feel what we’re doing. The fact that we’re able to work together cohesively on stage is a big, big comfort.
Greg: Covers help. Just be personable. Be yourself. Show them why they should like you, etc. Matt: If you're not walking off the stage at the end of the set drenched in sweat and gasping for air then you didn't go hard enough. I have a tendency to stand up at certain parts and shout out lyrics or clap my sticks together to get the crowd involved.

Crowdsurf Central: "Henchmen" is full of energy. Do you bring the same energy to the studio as you do the stage?
Hope: Yeah! I actually get really bored at the studio…. which is probably a bad thing to say. But I really put so much of my energy into performing. By the time that adrenaline wears off by the last song of our set, I start to feel like a wet noodle because of how much energy I put out. I’m just an energetic person in general, though. I like to jump around and dance, sing, be silly. That’s just my personality naturally!
Greg: Yeah, I try to literally go nuts with every show I play. I'm really glad we got that energy out on the recording though. Makes me happy!
Matt: I normally don't watch the crowd because you'll find me headbanging and hitting hard. I obv. don't run around or have the freedom the other two have. But I make my drum parts around what I'm capable of doing behind the kit while giving that kid who came to our show the best performance they've ever seen.

Crowdsurf Central: "Henchmen" comes out on Jan 13th - what comes next?
Hope: “VERSUS” was only put out like… 7 months ago. It feels like over a year. But it’s only been 7-8 months, so we aren’t in a rush to throw another EP out there so quickly. We really want to write and not necessarily move at a slow pace on purpose, but we want to make sure every track on the next EP is properly developed. I think our goal is May/June for a new EP. And touring in the Spring hopefully.
Greg: Some more new music being written, for sure. And some more shows! Probably on the East coast for now. But we would like to go into new markets this summer!
Matt: Writing and touring is top priority. VERSUS was a step in the right direction. I want to have new songs for sure. I have a tendency to get bored haha, it's my A.D.D.

Keep an eye on Crowdsurf Central for the debut of "Henchmen" on January 13th.

Simple Plan announce 15-year anniversary tour for "No Pads, No Helmets... Just Balls"

Their most iconic album, Simple Plan have announced a tour in honor of the 15th anniversary of No Pads, No Helmets... Just Balls.

In a statement from their Instagram the band said:

"It's hard to believe that this year, we will be celebrating the 15th anniversary of our debut album "No Pads, No Helmets...Just Balls". To commemorate this very special milestone, we are extremely excited to announce that we will be heading out on tour performing our entire first album all over the US. Even cooler, the tour kicks off on March 19th, the exact date the album came out, back in 2002.
These last 15 years have been an incredible journey for us. From rehearsing and writing songs in our parents' basements to selling millions of albums and playing shows all over the world, we got to live so many of our dreams because of this band and we couldn't be more grateful. The best part is that we got to do it all with the same 5 friends who started the band together; we couldn't be more proud of that!
After releasing our 5th album last year and playing more than 100 shows in over 40 countries, we felt it was important take this opportunity to look back and celebrate the amazing adventure we've had as a band and as friends. It felt important to do something special, something we've never done before to mark this landmark in our lives. This is why we wanted to do this tour. "No Pads, No Helmets...Just Balls" changed everything for us and we are so excited to play all these songs again and relive a time in our lives full of so many amazing memories.
More than anything, we wanted to do this tour for you, our fans, who have been there since day one, supporting us and giving us the chance to do what we love the most in life. So many of you have told us how much these songs have meant to you over the years and how this record had a big impact on your lives. We wanted to do this tour to celebrate the emotional connection we all share with these songs. We hope these shows can make you feel like a kid again, make you want to sing your heart out and bring you back to a time where nothing mattered except listening to music, hanging out with friends and going to concerts.
2017 is gonna be an amazing year of celebration for the band and we really hope you'll be able to join us for these very unique shows. Thanks for all your support and see you very soon!
Pierre, Chuck, Sébastien, Jeff and David."
