FIRST BLOOD SIGN WITH PURE NOISE RECORDS; NEW ALBUM, ‘RULES,’ OUT FEB 10TH; STREAM THE NEW SONG “RULES OF LIFE” NOW!

Vicious metal-edged hardcore band First Blood have officially joined Pure Noise Records and will release a new album, Rules, on February 10th. Fans can now pre-order the record and watch the band’s pummeling video for the new song “Rules of Life” below:

First Blood’s union with Pure Noise Records marks a new chapter for the band as they join the label’s eclectic roster, which includes fellow hardcore acts like Terror, Knocked Loose, Senses Fail and more.

"Not only has Jake (Round) at Pure Noise been there and seen us during our earlier days back in the San Francisco Bay Area, but he has worked hard and created a tremendous record label that continues to make a huge impact in the underground music scene worldwide,” says vocalist Carl Schwartz. “We are proud to join the Pure Noise roster, excited to share our newest album with the world, and thankful for the new life. FIRST BLOOD RULES 2017."

On their first album in 7 years, First Blood has come out swinging with a savage 3rd full-length record, Rules. Produced by recording mastermind Will Putney at Graphic Nature Studios (formerly known as The Machine Shop) in Belleville, NJ, Rules features 12 tracks of the band's hardest, yet most inward-looking material to date. Elaborating on the album title, Schwartz adds:

"Rules are everywhere. Explicit rules. Unwritten rules. Unspoken rules. The rule of law. Some rules we accept. Others we hate or choose to ignore. Frequently, those who set the rules are found guilty of breaking those rules. Many have become victims of the rules they live by, either by conquest or consent. I hope that, after listening to this album and reading the lyrics, we can revisit and remind ourselves of the very essence of the underground music scene: Living our own lives by our own rules."

That rebellious sentiment can be felt throughout the band’s torrential new song “Rules of Life,” which pushes back against society’s norms and puts a fist in the air for individuality and freedom of thought.

“We are often the product of the rules we are taught to live by,” Schwartz adds. “Growing up, someone I looked-up to once told me, "You wake up everyday. You go to a job you hate. You come home miserable. Then you go to bed. And then you do it again. And again. And again. And then you die. That's life." For a while, I believed this was true. Now that I am older and have a son of my own, I wish for him to see things differently--to live differently. To him, I say "Have courage to stand on your own. Follow what you believe even when you're alone. Be strong. Be proud. Be brave. Be a fucking rebel instead of a slave. See the world and follow your dreams. Wolfgang, this is for you. That's life."

First Blood will tour Europe with Deez Nuts and Comeback Kid in February and are expected to return to the U.S. later this year.

The Restless Atlantic

Our local friends in Restless Atlantic, coming from Portland Maine, have just dropped their new EP Afterglow which is a refreshing new piece. We were fortunate enough to be able to chat with them about the EP, and 2016 in general. If you don’t know who these guys are make sure to go give them a listen, you will not regret it.

Crowdsurf Central: So tell about the new EP?

The Restless Atlantic: Afterglow is something that we've been working towards for a long time as musicians. For me (Cam) personally, this is the first collection of songs that I feel truly represent the sound that I've always been looking for. This is the most technically sound and challenging work we'd done. In that same breath we can most definitely say that these are the most catchy and meaningful songs. We poured everything we had into this EP.

CSC: What was it like getting it all together?

TRA: Writing the album was very intense. We rarely just roll with the first thing that comes up. In some cases the first thing you write or agree upon is so good that it never changes, but just about everything on this album went under a lot of scrutiny. I wish that I could say that it all comes so easy and organically, but that's not the case. It takes writing, evaluating, rewriting, and working towards making sure every aspect of the song is what you want. It's in the details for us. Every single note we play or lyric we sing, we mean it. As for recording, we always take longer than we want to. It's the perfectionist tendencies that can seem to be a good thing but at the same time be somewhat of a detriment, especially when it comes to creating content quickly. We were very happy with the finished product though. John Zebley of Catalyst Audio recorded and mixed it. After that we sent it to Kris Crummett of Interlace Audio to have it mastered. He's worked on so many great records, it was a no brainer.

CSC: What were some highs/lows of 2016?

TRA: Many highs including the most touring we've ever done, releasing the album, opening for Memphis May Fire at Port City Music Hall in Portland. Lows would have to be the middle of the recording process for me. It gets to the point where it feels like there is no end in sight. Being in a band can be more stress that it seems to be worth at times. However the moments of total bliss when performing it to people who truly care about what you're doing make all of the low points fade away.

CSC: What was your experience at Crowdsurf Against Cancer like?

TRA: It was great. Seth has been nothing but friendly and supportive of so many local groups, including us. It's really humbling to be a part of something that brings cancer and mortality in general to the front of people’s minds. It makes you strive to cherish each day and let the people you care about know exactly how much you do care. There was nothing but positivity in the room that night.

CSC: What do you have planned for the coming year?

TRA: This year will be an onslaught of touring and getting this EP out there. As much as we want to get back into the studio and record new songs, this album needs to have it's moment in the sun. I'd love to do a studio performance for this album as well if things work out in our favor.

The Restless Atlantic will be playing at "Light The Way Music Fest 2017" on January 14th. Click here for details.

If you want to know more about The Restless Atlantic, you can find them on Facebook, on their Bandcamp, on Spotify, or send them an email at therestlessatlantic@gmail.com.

Seth's Top Ten Albums of 2016: 5-1

Narrowing down the list was harder than I thought, so let's get to it.

Sum 41 - 13 Voices

Did I pick this album because I'm a Sum 41 fan-boy? Maybe. Out of all the early 2000's pop-punk bands to put an album out this year (blink-182, Good Charlotte, Simple Plan, Green Day) this is the one I enjoyed the most. The album covers a wide range of emotions, all experienced by frontman Deryck Whibley as he recovered from a near-death experience in 2015. I'd be lying if I said I wasn't crying while photographing Sum 41's set at Warped Tour in Hartford this past summer; it was a surreal experience. This album is more than just music, it's a statement. Sum 41 is back and ready to take their place atop the world.

Listen to: Fake My Own Death

ROAM - Backbone

Another band from the UK making the list and for good reason. ROAM's debut album Backbone was one that took me by surprise. I enjoyed it more than I thought I would and that their performance at Warped Tour sealed it for me. ROAM really hit the nail on the head with this album. It seems that punk and pop-punk are headed in a certain direction/sound and ROAM is leading the charge.

Listen to: Leaving Notice

Abandoned By Bears - The Years Ahead

One of many hidden gems Victory Records found, this Swedish easycore band put out one of my absolute favorite albums of the year. I was lucky enough to interview members of Abandoned By Bears twice, once in Providence and again in Manchester, and was able to see them a third time before they took off for the Long Days and EZ Nights of Summer Tour with Save The Lost Boys (whose album was #8 on this list) and my good friends in Friday Night Lites. A great album and a great find by Victory Records, I hope to see ABB in the US in 2017.

Listen to: Good Terms

Rarity - I Couldn't Be Weaker

I first saw Rarity at a holiday show with Broadside and State Champs in Providence, RI at the end of 2015. Their on-stage energy was what grabbed my attention and had me counting the days until their debut album came out. I love everything about this album; it just speaks to me. The opening track 'Hollow' nails it with the chorus, "Drown myself in alcohol, cigarettes and long distance calls no need to judge yourself, just figure out why you feel so alone. No need to waste another day trying to fight the fact that you feel so hollow." The album also features a track with guest vocals by State Champs frontman Derek DiScianio and a number of other songs all punk fans need to hear.

Listen to: Hollow

Like Pacific - Distant Like You Asked

As if I'd pick anything else. This album is absolutely perfect. One of the next big names in pop-punk, Like Pacific played 117 shows this year and I was lucky enough to see them three times. The first was in Boston while Like Pacific was on the Alternative Press Tour with State Champs and Neck Deep, I was even lucky enough to interview Luke and Chris before the show. The next two came at Warped Tour in Hartford and Mansfield, where much to my surprise they remembered me. Due to a scheduling conflict the interview in Hartford fell through, but it was still one hell of an experience. Much like their good friends Broadside exploded onto the scene, the same is happening for Like Pacific, and for good reason. Distant Like You Asked is making lists of top albums across the industry which can only mean one thing: it's a good album, a great album. Vocals, guitar work, drumming... everything on this album comes together perfectly. I can't wait to see what 2017 brings for Like Pacific.

Listen to: Distant

Well. That's it. 2017 should be another great year for the punk scene. I don't know about you but the idea of new albums from Broadside and Neck Deep has me pretty damn excited.

Jordyn's Top-Five Albums of 2016

Basement – Promise Everything
There is no doubt that Promise Everything would be on this list. I have been a Basement fan since Songs About The Weather, and seeing the band transform over time has made my fangirl heart happy. Promise Everything is the first full-length release since Colourmeinkindness in 2012 before the band’s hiatus. The new album showcases the band’s grungier sound, matched with some mellow ballads like “Oversized” and “Halo” that give the album a great balance. I will be honest, when I first listened to the album I expected more songs similar to “Whole” and “Yoke,” but once I fully immersed myself and saw the new songs performed live, I felt much differently. I truly believe this is Basement’s finest work, and I certainly am not the only one to think so. All in all, this album is absolutely my favorite release of 2016, and I’m looking forward to much more music in the future from these guys.
Listen to: “For You The Moon

Pinegrove – Cardinal
Cardinal may be the oddball on the list, but it certainly stands tall amongst many of the releases of 2016. With their powerful harmonies, lively instrumentals, and relatable lyrics, Pinegrove seems to fit within their own heavenly genre. The album has a great mixture of fast-paced jams like “Visiting” and some slow and emotional songs like “Aphasia.” What stuck out to me the most about Cardinal, aside from the beautifully unique vocals, was the way the album flows lyrically with “Old Friends” as its start and “New Friends” as its end.
Listen to: “New Friends

Tancred – Out of the Garden
Jess Abbott (Tancred; Now, Now) is amongst many of the kick-ass female musicians that blessed the industry in 2016. Tancred’s release of Out of the Garden brought us female punk power complete with angsty lyrics and a hint of darkness. The instrumentals are punchy and her voice is striking, and each song carries its own energy. Whether I found myself yell-singing to “Pens” or pounding on the steering wheel to “Pretty Girls,” it is so easy to get lost in every song on the album. I, personally, consider this the best road-trip album of the year.
 Listen to: “Pretty Girls

Mat Kerekes – Luna & the Wild Blue Everything
As the calmest release on the list, Luna & the Wild Blue Everything is a perfect blend of somber and sweet. Mat Kerekes (Citizen) shows us a softer side that compliments Citizen’s heavier sound. Don’t get me wrong, Luna & the Wild Blue Everything has some upbeat songs like “Direction” and “The Means of (),” but the slower melancholic songs are what really captured me. Kerekes brilliantly showcases his vocal capabilities on this album. The expressive lyrics paired with the soothing instrumentals prove Kerekes’ to be a musical genius.
Listen to: “From None"

Like Pacific - Distant Like You Asked
As the cliché goes, Distance Like You Asked may be last on this list, but it is certainly not the least. To be truthful, Like Pacific caught me a little off guard with this release. I was expecting a great album from them, of course, but after listening to it front to back it had far exceeded my expectations. The album is extremely catchy and has a great sense of “flow.” With many of the newer pop-punk bands that have emerged from the scene, I find a lot of them merging together with songs that are far too similar. This is not the case with Like Pacific, as vocalist Jordan’s unique sound and their sentimental lyrics set them apart from the rest. What I love the most about this album is that it’s so hard to pick just one song to be “the song” to check out from this album because every song is a hit.

Runner-Ups:
Knocked Loose – Laugh Tracks
Pity Sex – White Hot Moon
From States Away – Hypervigilant

Seth's Top Ten Albums of 2016: 10-6

This year gave us so much good music and picking out my favorite albums was quite the task. I spent a lot of time working on this list and feel like I can confidently say these are my ten favorite albums of 2016.

A Loss for Words - Crisis

An album that caught many by surprise, A Loss for Words put out Crisis at the end of December and I immediately fell in love. What's more impressive is the work vocalist Matty Arsenault has done with local bands. Helping manage Under Fire and appearing on Acadia's debut EP In Focus. This album is everything AL4W fans could ask for and is one hell of a way to say goodbye.

Listen to: Existential Crisis at the Cask 'n Flagon

Boston Manor - Be Nothing

This debut album from UK punks Boston Manor is a great way to jump into the scene and make yourself known. An album many seemed to enjoy, Be Nothing drew a ton of attention from those in the industry, as shown by the shows Boston Manor has played and is scheduled to play. Touring with Like Pacific, Broadside, and Rarity in October exposed Boston Manor to a large number of new fans. The band is scheduled to tour parts of Europe and the UK with Four Year Strong in February followed by a tour with Moose Blood, Trophy Eyes, and A Will Away which stops in Boston on March 14th.

Listen to: Lead Feet

Save The Lost Boys - Temptress

Another debut album, and not the last, Temptress by Save The Lost Boys makes the list. The perfect album for fans of blink-182, Temptress is a great album for someone who is looking to start listening to pop-punk. They also put on one hell of a good show, as I personally saw multiple times during the Long Days and EZ Nights of Summer Tour. Look for another band from that tour later on in this list. Going through a breakup? Listen to this album as STLB subtly bashes their exes.

Listen to: Bad Names

PUP - The Dream Is Over

As you may have read in Gunnar's top-five PUP finally put out a new album after their self-titled album released in 2014 kept fans wanting more. One of the less-recognized bands out there, PUP spent nearly all of the year on the road. The opening song "If This Tour Doesn't Kill You, I Will" is all about that special time spent on the road with your best friends. Sure touring is great, but sometimes you just need to get away from everyone, and that's exactly what this song covers. The Dream Is Over gives us that classic PUP sound we all love and is an album everyone needs to hear.

Listen to: DVP

I Prevail - Lifelines

A band that exploded onto the scene with their cover of Taylor Swift's 'Blank Space,' I Prevail put out an EP 'Heart vs Mind" that sold exceptionally well. I was lucky enough to interview clean vocalist Brain Burkheiser and drummer Lee Runestad when the band stopped in Boston in early August. Their debut album Lifelines was relentlessly pushed by their publicist and for good reason. The only non-punk album on the list, Lifelines deserves all the praise in the world, as does I Prevail. While on tour with Neck Deep and Pierce The Veil in October the band's bus caught fire. However, despite the setback I Prevail did indeed prevail and finished the tour.

Listen to: Scars

Albums five through one will be published tomorrow.

Luke's Top-Five Albums of 2016

Stick to Your Guns – Better Ash Than Dust
Favorite Song: No Tolerance
I’ve been following Stick to Your Guns for a long time, because they always deliver some of the best breakdowns, vocals, and heavy hitting tracks in the business. The EP slipped out in the fall completely under my nose, and when I finally got around to listening to it, it absolutely blew me away, as usual. The whole EP is phenomenal, but the short, aggressive, punchy “No Tolerance” makes me want to mosh literally every time I hear it.
This track and album are best when cranked on a makeshift stereo system with some space to move around, because you’re going to need it.

A Day to Remember – Bad Vibrations
Favorite Song: Negative Space
As always, A Day to Remember delivers a memorable, balanced, and beautiful sound in Bad Vibrations. Paranoia set the tone for what we were in for, and Bad Vibrations followed that single up perfectly. Maybe it’s because I’m a designer, but Negative Space stood out to me immediately stood out to me for its melodic, speedy intro. Like the title, the lyrics are quiet, reflective, and the overarching feeling of sadness contrasted against the upbeat tune creates a fantastic conceptual dissonance that kept me coming back.
This track is perfect for the commute, blasting on the subway.

Clams Casino – 32 Levels
Favorite Song: Ghost in a Kiss
Clams is a producer who made his name developing beats for several different underground hip-hop artists, and 32 Levels is his first full-length solo project. His style is unmistakable, and it results in an eclectic mix of sounds, ranging from sad, refractive ballads to instrumental mind trips. My favorite track is “Ghost in a Kiss” which creates a haunting soundscape that provokes a feeling of emotional loss that I can’t really describe. The complex vocals, the blended birds chirping, and snares (sounds weird, I know) create an intricate trip that always manages to leaving something else to discover. Vocals & sound blend seamlessly into something that you’ve probably never quite experienced before, and the combination has given me physical chills on multiple occasions.
I’d recommend experiencing it while driving alone at 5am in the morning on an empty road.

The Dillinger Escape Plan – Disassociation
Favorite Song: Manufacturing Discontent
The Dillinger Escape Plan always brings something new to the game with every release, and this project is no different. This wild and weird album is Dillinger’s most experimental project by far, and that’s saying a lot. Instead of devolving into predictability, The Dillinger Escape Plan floors it and crashes into unknown territory, and everyone is better for it. Dissonant, convulsive, and jarring are the first words that come to my mind when describing the whole project, but especially Manufacturing Discontent, which seems to be the sonic equivalent of someone kicking you out of an airplane with a rocket strapped to your back instead of a parachute.
It’s like nothing you’ve ever heard, and will likely be one of your weirdest listening experiences of 2016.  You are not prepared.

Highly Suspect – The Boy Who Died Wolf
Favorite Song: My Name is Human
Highly Suspect takes you back to the grungy summer days of my youth, but it will take other listeners to many different places, and that’s the beauty of it this project. Drawing from classic grunge-punk and shoegaze, the industrial distortion and thoughtful lyrics give you plenty to chew on, and also leave much to the imagination. My favorite track off of this project is My Name is Human, an introspective, grungy adventure that’s simply good for the soul.
Find a quiet, dark place, plug in, and listen to the whole thing in one go. It’s worth it.

Gunnar's Top-Five Albums of 2016

2106 gave us a ton of great music and when I was asked to pick my five favorite albums I really had to put some thought into it. With that said, here they are:

My fifth favorite album this year was Green Day’s new album Revolution Radio, and it’s not because I’m a huge Green Day fan boy. I’ll admit, I wasn’t big on it when this album came out but it has grown on me. I was looking for more songs like 'Bang Bang' and the title track 'Revolution Radio,' but honestly the album is really good. I think Green Day gets a lot of flack for not fitting the model of what most people consider punk, but they just keep being them and producing solid punk rock that is likable to more than our ‘exclusive’ punk rock club. My favorite song off the album is Youngblood, it’s honestly just a classic Green Day tune and underrated, for sure,

Coming in at number 4 is are our friends Behind Deadlines. Their new album Status Quo has been playing in my ears at least once a day in entirety since it came out. It’s catchy, fun, and easy to sing along/identify with. Ska Punk is not dead so long as these guys are around. My favorite song is 'Sink or Swim,' because it’s a good motivational song, and might be the inspiration of a tattoo I’m working on designing. If you haven’t heard the album, go take a listen here and read up on what went into Status Quo

Third on the list goes to… NOFX. NOFX came out with a great new album, First Ditch Effort, that much like Green Day’s took some additional listens to fall in love with. This album is overall an emotional one and reminds us that it’s okay to admit you have some problems you’re working through. For that reason, my favorite track is 'I Don’t Like Me Anymore' because I could feel the pain in Fat Mike’s lyrics and it gave me something to connect with. 'Generation Z' and 'Oxymoronic' were close to stealing my favorite song but in fairness I liked most of the album a lot.

Honorable mentions: I have an honorable mention, and it goes out to the boys in Mickey Rickshaw. I got to see these lads in Allston when they opened for The Interrupters and they brought the crowd to life. I liked their album Behind the Eight Ball a fair amount, and in particular 'Rats in Allston'. That song is high power and I was instantly adding it to playlists as it rocks and has a highly political message. Make sure to give these boys a listen, they put on a hell of a show.

Alright, these next two are a bit of a toss up, I loved both these albums as soon as they hit the shelf. PUP dropped their new album, The Dream Is Over, back in May but I did not forget it. The album works its way into my rotation of music almost daily and it honestly is one of the most unique albums I’ve ever heard. My favorite song off the album is DVP because it’s so thrashy and fast it kicks me into overdrive. This album is a masterpiece, plain and simple.

And finally, we reach number one. This year the album I love the most is Say It Out Loud by The Interrupters. It’s the best album across the entirety of music to come out this year, I don’t care how much "Lemonade" you drink (fight me Rolling Stone). This album is flawless, absolutely flawless. This makes the list of albums in which I love every single song, and that list isn’t very long. Since I had to pick a favorite, it’s going to have to be 'On A Turntable,' because it’s another anthem song for those who are struggling day to day: it’s a good reminder to not give up, and you can conquer anything life throws at you.

Albums that would have made Top Ten include: Sum 41 - 13 voices, Direct Hit! - Was It The Acid?, Pulley - No Change In The Weather, Face To Face - Protection, Descendents - Hypercaffium Spazzinate

BLACK STAR RIDERS RELEASE THIRD TRAILER FOR NEW ALBUM, ‘HEAVY FIRE’

BLACK STAR RIDERS are set to release their forthcoming album Heavy Fire on the February 3rd with Nuclear Blast Entertainment. In anticipation of the release, the band have unveiled a third video trailer in which Damon Johnson, Ricky Warwick and Scott Gorham discuss returning to the studio with The Killer Instinct¹s producer Nick Raskulinecz (Rush, The Foo Fighters, Mastodon). Watch the video here:

Ricky comments:

"Well you know we had such as good time making The Killer Instinct with him. Nick's a great guy, he's a musical genius, he's sonically very together and has great ears. He's got a great passion for music, 24/7 he never switches off. The Killer Instinct was a very successful record for us and we felt there was no need to change the team because we were happy. I think that¹s helped develop our own sound."

AWAKEN I AM SIGN TO VICTORY RECORDS

Brisbane, Australia’s dynamic rock outfit AWAKEN I AM have joined the Victory Records roster. Beginning their journey in 2012, AWAKEN I AM have taken the Australian rock scene and turned it on its head, bringing their unique sound to a dedicated, underground following worldwide. Formed by vocalist Adam Douglas, AWAKEN I AM rebirthed themselves in 2014 with the addition of drummer Luke McKenzie and guitarists Ned Jankovic and Connor Oakley. The instant energy of the band clicked and their DIY work ethic, drive and hunger caught the attention of Victory Records, who are proud to welcome the four-piece to the label family.

"Victory is a label that has released albums that have literally shaped the modern rock genre. We are excited to work with a company that innovates because that is what we hope to achieve as a band with this new record," says McKenzie.

In 2014, AWAKEN I AM released their first album Shields & Crowns, which went on to reach #3 on the iTunes Australian Metal Chart, followed by tours with Chiodos, The Devil Wears Prada, Emarosa, I Set My Friends On Fire, headlining dates in Japan and an appearance at this year’s So What Festival in Dallas.

AWAKEN I AM will be on tour across the planet this spring and throughout 2017 in support of their new album. Stay tuned for more album details and tour dates to be announced soon.

LATIN AMERICAN METAL BAND DE LA TIERRA LAUNCH WEBSTORE AND RELEASE NEW ALBUM ON VINYL LP

Latin American metal band, De La Tierra, recently released their new album, II, via Sony Music Latin to mass critical acclaim. Now only a few short weeks after, the band has launched webstore and released the new album on vinyl LP. Fans can purchase it now at http://delatierra.shop.musictoday.com/store/

The album is also available for purchase digitally at http://smarturl.it/DeLaTierraAlbum.

De La Tierra is one of Latin America’s most exciting metal bands to come out in years. The band consists of  some of the region’s most elite metal musicians, including Brazilian guitarist Andreas Kisser (Sepultura), Argentine singer/guitarist Andres Gimenez (A.N.I.M.A.L.), Argentine bassist Sr. Flavio (Los Fabulosos Cadillacs) and Cuban/Mexican drummer Alex Gonzalez (Maná). Their new album was produced by Ross Robinson (Slipknot, Korn, Deftones) and features ripping new songs that combine the band’s unique blend of styles and influences, as heard on tracks like “Puro” and “Valor Interior.”

“The response from the fans has be very positive from the very beginning. With the first record we were finding our sound and identity (we produced our first record) and I think we did a great job - and touring and opening up for bands like Metallica, Slipknot and being in important festivals like Rock in Rio, Santiago gets Louder, Vive Latino (just to name a few) gave the band a big opportunity for people to see and hear the band in front of a huge crowd  (since we had no radio support at all, this was very positive ) so we are very thankful to all the fans that believed and supported us since the beginning.” - Alex “El Animal” Gonzalez

The band finds themselves in good company with the Pasadena based label, whose impressive roster includes Stick To Your Guns, Counterparts, The Story So Far, State Champs and Knocked Loose among others. The band will release a new EP this coming spring.

"After a great run of releasing records with Century Media and Victory for the last 10 years, it's exciting to find a fresh, new home for Terror,” says vocalist Scott Vogel. “We are humbled to still be a band with a lot of love and support around the world, and Pure Noise Records is exactly who we wanted to work with for our future. We look forward to the next chapter in this wild ride and couldn't be happier to be doing it together with Jake (Founder of Pure Noise Records).”

Behind Deadlines Debut New Album 'Status Quo'

The deadline is here, and the product rocks

Behind Deadlines have just dropped their new album 'Status Quo' and it’s honestly anything but. This album is rocking from start to finish. We were lucky enough to chat with them, and hear what they had to say about their new album, politics, and the future of Ska.

Crowdsurf Central: What inspired the album?

Behind Deadlines: This album is the best-of tracks from a two year songwriting process between a bunch of ska-punk veterans. We've listened to all sorts of mediocre ska recordings. Some of us have even played on a few. It's a disservice to a genre that we feel deserves better. So, in the same way Blink 182 looked through their old catalog and stitched the best bits together to a complete retrospective for California, we looked into our mental archive of great punk and ska albums and went about pulling together songs that could stand alongside them. The goal is for this album to be something that old and new punk and ska fans alike can really enjoy.

CSC: What are your views on the election?

BDL: A lot of people in the punk and ska community seem pretty bummed out. We're not political experts, but we're doing what we can to contribute some fun energy to help blow away that funk. This music has always been about unity, and we welcome people of any race, nationality, gender, or political view to come out to shows and party with us. Ska works best when everyone's having a good time.

CSC: What do you think of the Ska scene now?

BDL: Depends on where you look. The US seems to be hitting a period without any alternative music, ska or otherwise, and we're seeing it at shows for sure. Our generation's growing up and we don't see enough youth coming in to take our place. Venues are sticking to 21-and-up shows and taking a quantity-over-quality approach with bands in a desperate effort to get people and money through the door each night, and even with all of that they're failing and closing down. It's definitely rough. But if you look to Latin America and Europe and Asia, there's a lot of amazing stuff happening. The 2016 Pepsi Ska Fest in Mexico City brought The Mighty Mighty Bosstones, Save Ferris, Reel Big Fish, and Less Than Jake together with a lot of amazing Spanish-speaking acts that the ska community here would love. Ska bands are playing arenas and fairgrounds in Germany and Japan. We've just got to rethink our approach in the states, and there's definitely hope for that. Blink 182, Sum 41, Fenix TX, and Save Ferris comeback tours in 2016 are a good sign. An even better one is the upcoming 2017 Nova International Ska Fest in Virginia. We sincerely hope to see an insane crowd there.

CSC: What’s your favorite holiday tradition?

BDL: As a band, I think we're going to have to say "drinking," and we've really found ways to incorporate it into all holidays great and small. But of course everyone loves the gift of giving, and with our album being a name-your-own-price download on Bandcamp, you could really make someone's holiday special on a budget this year. And that's how you sneak a plug into the answer to a very innocent interview question. (Do that here.)

CSC: Anything you want to say about the album?

BDL: It's the next great ska album. Download it or buy a copy, and don't be afraid to play it for friends. If you're reading this and think we're full of crap and our music sucks, download it anyway. You don't have to pay anything, and if you'll have the satisfaction of knowing if you're right or not.’

Honestly, this band is the best thing to hit the Ska scene since Reel Big Fish and Suburban Legends. Go get the album, seriously, just do it. My favorite track off the album (lots of tough choices here) is  going to be “Sink or Swim”, it’s catchy and a lot of fun but also has a great message. I really struggled to pick a favorite here, and the whole album is 5/5 if you ask me I didn’t have any issues to complain about, and I’m pretty good at finding something to bitch about.

If you live out west you’re in luck, these guys will be there for a few shows, go see them if you can.

  • 12/8 – San Diego, CA – Till Two Club
  • 12/9 – Anaheim, CA a – Out of the Park Pizz
  • 12/10 – Tijuana, MX – Mods Bar & Venue

WATCH CRYSTAL LAKE’S NEW VIDEO FOR “BLACK AND BLUE” HERE:

Crystal Lake’s infectious new rock anthem “Black and Blue” is a taste of what’s to come from the band’s forthcoming record, True North, that’s due for release on Friday. The track features guest vocals by Jesse McFaddin from fellow Japanese rock bands RIZE and The BONEZ, and blends an eclectic mix of influences for a unique signature sound.

“Based on our metal/hardcore music style, we used beat of funk/soul into heavy music and tried to write something new,” says guitarist YD. “We aim to emphasize the contrast of stillness and motion with bouncy riffs and beat and emotional melodies are. I am happy how this song turned out after trying hard to comprehend elements of the music I was influenced.”

“"No pain no gain" might be used for an idiom to explain how hard you must train to build your body for macho men but this song ain't about "Get up song for tough guys" at all,” adds vocalist Ryo. “What I wanted to say was that blood, sweat and tears with "Pain" can be beautiful pieces of art. I really appreciate if you can feel the evanescence and beauty that created from the "Pain"that anyone, everyone has.”

The video for the song was directed by Kei Ikeda, who helped the band craft a cathartic and emotional trip that takes viewers from Japan to the U.S. with an explosive rooftop performance.

“This music video is about letting the world know what we've felt growing up in our country, Japan and the music we have created,” says YD. “We did shooting in 2 different cities, Tokyo and New York to make a film that proves there's no boundaries when it comes to creating music and art. The song has the subtle and profound atmosphere so we looked to express it with the lighting effect.”
