Hailing from Portland, ME, The Restless Atlantic are a four-piece post-hardcore band who aren't afraid to take a chance. Formed in 2014, the band released their heartfelt debut album 'Chasm' featuring 9 songs loaded with prominent guitars and powerful vocals. This release gave TRA the chance to tour the Northeast and open for bands such as Memphis May Fire, The Ongoing Concept and Wind In Sails. 2016 has allowed The Restless Atlantic to hone in on their sound, spending much of their time writing or in the studio. The result is the band's sophomore release 'Afterglow', released on September 16th. 'Afterglow' sees the band taking a more unique approach, combining post-hardcore with progressive tones and pop melodies. Single "Hyperventilate" perfectly displays what The Restless Atlantic are capable of and the band are looking forward to where the rest of the year leads them.

Firestarter

Hailing from Albany, New York, Firestarter is a band to keep an eye out for. As they finish their national tour with Capstan that saw them play 16 different states, we were lucky enough to see them right before they headed out at NHBooking Fest '16 in Derry, New Hampshire. To say we were immediately impressed would be an understatement. The raw power and energy Firestarter brings is impressive. Combine that with amazing musicianship, clean beats and catchy hooks, and you have the potential for something special.

We had the chance to talk with vocalist and guitarist Matt LaPerche about the band, tour, their Warped Tour experience and much more.

Crowdsurf Central: How did the band form?

Matt: The band formed in 2012 after I moved up to the Albany, NY area after parting ways with my previous band. I began to write the songs from our first EP and shortly after found the principle founding members of the band including Matt Bliss, our drummer. We recorded New Beginnings in January of 2013 and haven't looked back since!

Who are some of your musical influences?

We all grew up in the heart of the mid-2000's post-hardcore, screamo, pop-punk bloom and we feel that's heavily reflected in our music. Some of those bands include Bayside, Silverstein, Saosin, Senses Fail, Armor For Sleep, Underoath, and the list could go on.

What is your writing process like?

Normally when it comes to writing, one of the four of us will bring a riff or even a bare bones song and we will start jamming it and build off of it. Once we have the instrumentals at a good point, I start writing vocal melodies and lyrics over it.

What was it like working with Jay Maas while recording 'A Life Inconsistent?'

Working with Jay was an absolute pleasure and such a great experience! Recording with him definitely helped us reach a new place with our writing process and overall sound as a band.

Tell me about your upcoming tour with Capstan.

We are hitting the road for a month across the country which started August 6th in Albany, NY and ends for us September 5th in Buffalo, NY! The tour has been an absolute blast and we couldn't ask for a better bunch of guys to be out with.

What are you looking forward to most?

Capstan just released a fantastic new EP called Cultural Divide and we really look forward to seeing it played live every night!

Is there a specific show/date you're most excited for?

Being back in California is definitely towards the top of the list. We always love going out there and haven't in a year so it was way overdue!

How do you survive tour?/What's in your tour survival kit?

Surviving on tour honestly isn't as hard it seems. Yeah showering can be sparse, but I always make sure to take care of myself as best I can, take a vitamin everyday, eat as healthy as I can (not really), and drink lots and lots of coffee. Coffee is king on the road.

How do you like working with Darth Fader Records?

Working with Craig over at Darth Fader has been great over the last few years! He helped us make having physical copies of our music as well as helped spread the word about the band

What was it like playing Warped Tour?

This was our second time playing Warped as a band, but this time was on main stage and that was absolutely insane to us. Such a great experience, we hope to do it again next year!

What's next for Firestarter?

As I mentioned before, we are currently out on the road with Capstan and once we get home for that, we hit the studio to record our first full length record! Keep an eye out for new music from us soon.

You can check out Firestarter's bandcamp page here.

Stokin' The Neighbors

Stokin’ The Neighbors just dropped their debut album, FEAR and it’s not bad. This album is a DIY punk dream, as they recorded all of it on their own at their houses. While the lyrics can be a little bit hard to distinguish (the audio is a little rough), you can tell that these guys are going to do something cool. I got some early Suicidal Tendencies vibes; especially from songs like ‘Noble Suicide’.

I had the privilege of talking to the drummer Jared Martin and he told me some information about shows, “You can often catch us at the Squashed Warehouse and out at Geno’s and various bars in Portland. We're playing the Upstart Antisocial Campout in NY next weekend”.

I personally haven’t been able to see them but I have a feeling that will change soon; I’m willing to bet these gentlemen put on one hellraiser of a show. You can find their album linked below, and their personal website as well if you want to get to learn more about them!

Straight Jacket Legends

You may not have heard of them, but, the Straight Jacket Legends are a band that are going places, count on it. They have a unique sound, and provide fresh pop punk riffs. We were lucky enough to talk to Jake and Dan, to get to know them (and Dan’s apparently small penis, he wanted you all to know that) and their band.  The gentleman are from Wales, which just is unfair, because the UK has a lot of great new pop punk coming out. They are currently signed to Paper + Plastick Records, and just dropped their debut album ‘Go Bananas’ which is available on iTunes and will be out on 10/19 via TME Records in Japan. Make sure to follow them on their Facebook and Twitter sites. You’ll want to know what these guys are up to.

My favorite song on the album probably has to be, Tell me how  you’re feeling, it’s just a great song to start the album with. Fast paced and the pinnacle of pop punk, it starts off their debut album perfectly.
We of course wanted to know where their orchestra pop punk sound came from, because it’s something we hadn’t heard in pop-punk, and this is what they had to say:

Crowdsurf Central: Where did you guys get the orchestra sound from?
SJL: Dan - Being fans of some classical music, we figured it was a cool thing to add into pop punk.
Jake - Yeah, we listen to a lot of different music. there's always been something beautiful about strings in rock music.

Being from the UK, we wondered if they’d been to the US, or if they planned to come tour here, and we got some good news! No official announcements yet, but, we hope to see these guys stateside soon!

CSC: Have you ever toured in the US?
SJL: Dan - We have never been to the US touring, but we have had some provisional offers already so we are hoping to be there next year.
Jake - We haven’t with SJL but me and Dan have with our old band.

Since we asked the boys some questions about coming to America to tour, we wondered what some of their favorite tour memories were and who they’d like to tour with, and who has the weirdest habits! Get to know the band, that after listening to, you’ll want to see!

CSC: What’s your favorite tour memory/favorite band you’ve toured with?
SJL: Dan - Probably when we did a tour with MC Lars, and after a day or two, we find out that our bus driver was the keyboardist in Cradle Of Filth!
Jake - Hahaha yeah that was awesome. Also some memorable tour moments with Thomas Nicholas Band.

CSC: Which one of you has the weirdest habit/hobby?
SJL: Dan - I collect pictures of disregarded mattresses on the road, no seriously.
Jake - We’ve slept on some pretty questionable mattresses on tour haha

CSC: If you could tour with anyone, alive or dead, who would it be?
SJL: Dan - For me, it would have to be Blink 182!
Jake- Hard question, there's just so many! Would be awesome touring with the bands we grew up with: Goldfinger, MxPx, Less Than Jake etc.

Check out their BandCamp page here.

Trapt - Make America Rock Again

Trapt, the California-based rock band best known for their 2002 hit "Headstrong," is back at it with their seventh studio album "DNA."

The band is currently out on the "Make America Rock Again" tour which will feature other artists who had success in the 2000s. With names like Drowning Pool, Puddle of Mudd, and Saving Abel, this is a tour you do not want to miss.

We had the chance to talk with bassist Pete Charell the new album and "Make America Rock Again Tour."

Crowdsurf Central: Where was the album recorded?

Pete Charell: The Omen Room in Garden Grove, CA

Crowdsurf Central: What was the writing process like?

Pete Charell: We wrote some stuff together and some stuff on our own and then combined forces to create this album.  Mainly, we would have some riffs and ideas that were recorded with programmed drums and then take that into a room and jam it out until it worked.

Crowdsurf Central: How do you maintain such a presence in the scene for so long?

Pete Charell: We still make albums and tour.   Our first single, Headstrong, exploded bigger than we could've ever imagined.  That enabled us to play in front of tons of people and gain a lot of fans.  Since then, we've been able  continue to tour and make albums for our fans and gain new fans along the way.

Crowdsurf Central: What song on DNA is your favorite?

Pete Charell: It's tough to say.  I like different songs on DNA for different reasons.

Crowdsurf Central: How is it having Brendan and Ty in the band?

Pete Charell: Having Ty and Brendan in the band is nice.  They are great at what they do.  Writing and recording with Ty was a big part of what made the sound of DNA.  Ty and I spent the majority of the time in the studio getting guitar and bass tones and coming up with cool overdubs.  Brendan is new to the band as of this tour and killing it.

Crowdsurf Central: The "Make America Rock Again" Tour has begun: What do you looking forward to most when touring? Favorite part about touring? Favorite city to play in?

Pete Charell: The make America rock tour started on August 6th.  My favorite part about touring is playing shows and getting to explore the world.  Certain cities are always fun, like NYC, Chicago etc.  It's also cool to play with other bands that you enjoy watching and hanging out with.

Crowdsurf Central: How do you survive tour?

Pete Charell: I have a ninja watching my back.  "Ninja" is our drum tech.  Having a solid crew helps move the tour along smoothly.  It's good to have people around that you can get along with and have a good time with.  It's also important to keep in touch with family over phone or see them as much as possible.

Be sure to catch Trapt in Portland, ME on September 18th.

The Kimberly Steaks

While the Brexit decision is shaking things up across the pond in the UK there is some good news coming from there if you know where to look.  We were lucky enough to have the Kimberly Steaks, a soon-to-be unhidden gem, answer some questions for us.

You may not have heard of these guys but The Kimberly Steaks are a band we should all be paying attention to. These dudes are from Glasgow, Scotland and got their name from their old drummer’s brother, who came up with it when he was eating a packet of steak & onion chips.

They recently toured with Murderburger on the “Cheap Meat Tour” and just got off tour with Don Blake and The Werecats. They play fast, aggressive music which reminds me a little bit of early Green Day and bands like Direct Hit!  When ask their influences they said, “Musically, we’re probably influenced most by Lookout! Records, stuff that we all listened to when we were younger, like Green Day, MTX, The Queers, The Muffs, Sicko etc. There are a lot of great bands in the UK like Wonk Unit, The Murderburgers and Zatopeks who probably have a big influence on the way we play too. Lyrically, the songs are mostly influenced by living in central Scotland and not having a whole lot to do besides eating crisps and drinking beer most of the time!”

When I asked who had the weirdest habit, they responded by saying, “Tam (bassist) loves to buy two different flavored tubes of Pringles and eat one of each at the same time. People think he’s crazy, but he doesn’t seem to mind, and usually just replies ‘I’m in flavour country.’” (To be completely honest I wish I’d thought of that, it doesn’t sound crazy at all.)

My favorite song of theirs is definitely Ticking Over, off their “Chemical Imbalance” album. It’s quick and just makes you want to mosh. You should definitely go check these guys out and download their music, which is risk free to you as it’s name your price over on BandCamp

We here at Crowdsurf Central hope to see a tour from The Kimberly Steaks over here in the US, and we hope everyone enjoys them as much as we do! Unfortunately for us we may have to wait for the US tour but, some there is some good news. “We just put out a new split 7” with Dead Bars from Seattle on All In Vinyl Records from Birmingham,” they told us. “We’ve recorded a few new songs for compilations. We’re currently writing a new album which should be out early next year if all goes according to plan! As for a US tour, we don’t have anything planned at the moment. We all work and study a lot so barely have time to play as much as we’d like in the UK. Maybe someday though, we’d love to sample the service station crisps (or “chips” as you call them) to see how they compare to ours!”

And as for their thoughts on Brexit, they seem pretty disgruntled and disappointed, because it could possibly negatively affect touring and bands over there. Hopefully it doesn’t, and hopefully it provides for some good material! We are looking forward to seeing what they do next!

Sum 41 Releases New Single and Music Video For "WAR"

Pop punk veterans Sum 41 have released their first single and accompanying music video "War", from the upcoming album 13 Voices, out October 7th on Hopeless Records. The video for "War" shows the band performing in the middle of a California desert in an airplane graveyard. Singer Deryck Whibley, uncovers reminders of his past - a journal, old drawing, t-shirt, guitar, and empty bottle of alcohol in the wreckage - and burns them along with his past life. Whibley says that the crash site represents how he "crashed and burned" and that the graveyard was "a place for a funeral for my past."

This song was picked as a single because of its importance to Whibley's personal life. He states, "I feel that this song literally saved my life. I was at my absolute lowest point of what seemed like a never-ending recovery. When I was at a tipping point of falling back into drinking or staying the course of recovery, I grabbed a pencil and paper instead of a bottle and started writing. Whenever I had any thoughts of giving up, I would read these lyrics to myself over and over again. They helped remind me of what it was that I was fighting for, and that I needed to keep fighting harder. Giving up was not an option."

Earlier this summer, Sum 41 released a music video for the leading fan track, "Fake My Own Death." The video has over 3.3 million views, and the number is still rising. Along with the newly released "War", this is the first look fan's have into Sum 41's forthcoming new album, 13 Voices. The ten-track album marks the band's first LP in five years, following up 2011's Screaming Bloody Murder, which featured the Grammy Nominated song "Blood In My Eyes."

The Sum 41 fans have been coming out in overwhelming numbers to the recent live shows, with the band playing to some of the biggest crowds of their career. Most recently wrapping up their summer run on the Vans Warped Tour, the band is currently touring overseas before kicking off their headline tour starting October 5th in Orlando, Florida.

Whibley began writing for 13 Voices immediately following his four-month stint in the hospital. The frontman recalls, "I had to learn how to do everything again-my motor skills, learning how to play guitar again... I couldn't even walk at the time. It was really difficult, but at the same time if I didn't have a record to make, I don't think I would have recovered as quickly, or even at all. Writing music gave me a purpose. I had to get better." As Whibley's health improved, so did his ability to write songs, and 13 Voices soon began to take shape being recorded, produced and engineered by Deryck Whibley at his home in Los Angeles.

Sum 41 consists of five members including Deryck Whibley, lead guitarist/backing vocalist Dave Brownsound, co-lead guitarist/backing vocalist Tom Thacker, bassist/backing vocalist Cone McCaslin and drummer Frank Zummo.

NOLA ROCK BAND CANE HILL RELEASES NEW SHIRT TO BENEFIT BATON ROUGE FLOOD VICTIMS

Louisiana based heavy rock band CANE HILL is showing support for victims of the recent disaster flooding in their home state by releasing a special edition t-shirt with proceeds going to benefit Second Harvest, which is assisting in relief efforts.

Support CANE HILL and their effort to help Louisiana by purchasing a shirt here.

"While we were thousands of miles away, we got to watch on TV as our state flooded leaving thousands homeless. There's been limited media coverage even though the scale of damage is similar to Katrina. Since we're physically home in limited spurts, we want to do everything we can to help the cause. The shirt we designed has a magnolia, the official flower of Louisiana, with 'unsinkable' under it to represent the resilience you can only find in the people of Louisiana. All proceeds from this shirt will be going to Second Harvest to provide food for displaced families.” - Elijah Witt

CANE HILL recently released their debut, full-length record, Smile, via Rise Records, which can be purchased at iTunes and local retailers. They also just wrapped up a summer run on the Vans Warped Tour and will be touring with Insane Clown Posse this fall.

Hardcore/metal band To The Wind has premiered the title track today from their forthcoming album, The Brighter View! The new record is due out on October 7th from Pure Noise Records. Stream the track and pre-order the record now at http://smarturl.it/ToTheWindnw.

"”The Brighter View" as a record is a combination of everything that is impacting our lives at this moment positively and negatively. The title track touches base with personal feelings towards life on tour and life at home. We wanted to give the listeners an honest point of view of how we view our lives day in and day out, on and off tour. “When the days are torn in two, I can't see the brighter view" means that there are two choices both equally important but you can't commit to both at the same time. You don't know what you want and there's a constant fear of regret that you may lose something along the way. With every choice there is a price to pay whether it's good or bad.” - Tanner Murphy (vocals)

The band recently wrapped up a summer excursion on the Common Vision Tour  with The Acacia Strain, Oceano and Knocked Loose and will be returning to the road in October for a tour with labelmates VANNA along with Capsize and Ghost Key.

About Sparrows:

Simply put, 2015 was a shitty year for Sparrows.

It didn’t start out that way; quite the opposite, in fact. Having steadily amassed industry attention and accolades for their unique brand of beautifully punishing post hardcore in prior years, the band signed with Toronto’s New Damage Records and dropped the heralded Dragging Hell EP shortly after. Despite soaring high and poised to capitalize on their major milestones, things skewed sideways.

“It seemed like every time we tried to make something happen or take a step forward, something weird would happen,” says guitarist and vocalist Dan Thomson. A broken finger, torn tricep, and transport woes ultimately meant cancelled tours and unwelcome downtime during what should have been the busiest span of their burgeoning career. But every cloud has a silver lining, and in Sparrows’ case, every setback bred a spark of inspiration.

Now, Thomson and bandmates Jon Busby, Justin Sears, and Kevin Dennison are back and hell-bent on blazing forward with Let the Silence Stay Where It Was, their sophomore LP following 2013’s Cold Ground and first on New Damage, dropping in the fall of 2016. Fuelled by the frustration of their misfortunes, the LP boasts a palpable catharsis and unprecedented level of intensity.

The album stays true to Sparrows’ signature and celebrated sound, showcasing their arsenal of crushing riffs coupled with intricate and ethereal melodic passages, a sharp sense of dynamics, and vocals that sway effortlessly from delicate to devastating. But while these may seem like familiar staples of the genre, what’s particularly notable about Sparrows is their execution – urgent but organic, stylish but substantial. They borrow more from the likes of Quicksand and Cave In than the contemporary cohort of underdeveloped and overproduced post-hardcore bands.

It’s a sound they’ve refined over the years with engineer/producer Kenny Bridges, the frontman of seminal Canadian melodic punk outfit Moneen and a longtime collaborator with Sparrows, dating back to their debut 2011 EP Goliath. “One thing I’ve learned over the years with Sparrows is we never take the simple route,” Bridges says. “We are always searching for a new sound or new way to approach a song. It’s that creativity that keeps us coming back to work together. They are taking chances that other bands just aren’t taking anymore.”

Perhaps what most sets Let the Silence Stay Where It Was apart from their back catalogue is that, whereas Sparrows had previously been a more solitary musical outlet for Thomson, their latest is a collective creative effort from a finally cemented lineup. “We just all seemed to be on the same wavelength,” Thomson says. “It was a bit tough for me at times, but in the end, the music is stronger than ever, and so is our bond as a band.”

That’s immediately evident in the music, with an undeniable power and emotive impact that pairs well with the band’s lyrical themes. Much like the soundtrack it anchors, Thomson’s poetry is aggressive and abrasive on the surface but with a remarkable depth and underlying beauty. “There was a ton of outward anxiety and just pure anger that we had to channel,” the singer says – “this overwhelming sense of letting people down and just not being in control.”

But once again, silver linings…

Dead set on making up for lost time, Sparrows will be tearing up highways for the foreseeable future, bringing their fiercely riotous live show to as many stages as possible. “That’s always the plan,” Thomson says emphatically. “We’re a live band first and foremost,” and that’s apparent even through the stereo, with Let the Silence Stay Where It Was capturing the raw energy born of these four guys pouring themselves into their performances and elevating the experience to something that defies the sum of its individual parts.

“There’s a beauty in that simplicity that seems to be lost these days,” Thomson muses – but it’s not lost on Sparrows, who like post-whatever pioneers before them are proving that substance and strong songwriting will always trump the charlatans – setbacks and all.

AUSTRALIA’S DUNE RATS AND DZ DEATHRAYS ANNOUNCE NORTH AMERICAN CO-HEADLINE NOVEMBER TOUR

After having a blast touring together in Australia on Violent Soho’s recent Waco tour, DUNE RATS and DZ DEATHRAYS have decided to step it up a notch and take the party abroad. Late last month, the bands announced their International Disaster Tour Part 1: UK & Europe and now they are thrilled to announce the second part to their International Disaster Tour, which sees them touring the USA & Canada.

No strangers to the global stage, it’s been a non-stop ride since Australia’s favorite stoner pop trio Dune Rats released their self-titled debut album in 2014 (the album was later released in North America in 2015 via Dine Alone Records), which Rolling Stone (Australia) dubbed an “unassuming statement of intent. No bullshit punk done well." They recently dropped “Bullshit” – their first new single in two years, produced by FIDLAR frontman Zac Carper – together with an expectedly insane music video filmed at a backyard party in Byron Bay. Watch the video for “Bullshit”here.

Dune Rats have had a stunning ascent so far and show no sign of stopping. Since the release of their debut LP, the band has toured relentlessly around the globe, playing to sell-out crowds in Australia and touring alongside genre heavyweights, Cosmic Psychos, The Subways, and FIDLAR, to name a few.

Since releasing their ARIA award-winning record Black Rat in 2014 on Dine Alone Records in Canada, DZ Deathrays have been keeping busy both consistently touring the world and keeping their heads down writing for their forthcoming third LP.

To tie fans over, DZ Deathrays kicked off 2016 with a stand-alone track “Blood On My Leather” and called up old mate Arj Barker to star in his second film clip for the band. After touring in Australia with Groovin' The Moo festival and a giant Australian joint tour, the DZ crew also managed to squeeze in two North American tours as well, which included Canadian dates in Quebec City, Montreal, Ottawa and Toronto. The video for “Blood On My Leather” can be seenhere.
The long-awaited International Disaster Tour will see Dune Rats and DZ Deathrays playing alternate headline slots on each date. Part 2 of the tour will kick off on November 7th in San Diego, CA and will include Canadian dates in Vancouver, Montreal, Ottawa and Toronto. A full list of shows can be seen below

Trash'n'Clean - Italian Punk Rock

Trash'n'Clean, an Italian punk rock band, have been together for a few years now. Formed by Mark (rhythm guitar), Danny (lead guitar), and Mario (drums) - they initially played covers until Fabio (vocals) and Marchino (bass) came into the picture when things became more serious. They began writing their first EP in December of 2014 and believe that was the real beginning of Trash'n'Clean as it is now.

Taking their name from an Italian tissue brand called Fresh & Clean, the band tells us, "We liked the idea of distorting their name because it's stupid as shit. Also, no one really knows them outside of Italy which is the market we are aiming at... so... why not?"

Everyone in the band grew up listening to bands like The Ataris, NOFX, Rancid, and blink 182, but consider themselves to be very open minded musicians and have listened to a wide variety of artists. "Our drummer comes from the crossover world," we were told as they referenced bands like Limp Bizkit, Papa Roach, and Rage Against the Machine. "This is definitely something particular that brings a bit of groove to some of our songs."

Trash'n'Clean lead singer Fabio has character in his voice and loves catchy melodies. "This means that most of the time he is considered too harsh for pop, but too melodic or hardcore or metal," we were told. "We all think this is a great hook which we need to use more and more in our songs," the band continued to say. "Overall, our background and personal characteristics make us a band that likes pop and linear songwriting. At the same time we love rough sounds and a bit of bite, which means that we could never be a pop rock band. Right now we are finding ourselves in the position where no one is actually able to label us and put ourselves into a specific 'family' of punk rock or pop punk music. However… we think this is a strength. It just takes time to become such."

But if you're in Italy why sing in English? That has to be a question many of you are asking yourselves right now. The answer is actually pretty simple: the market. "Italy is the place where heavy electric guitars are the least favorite things ever, musically speaking," they told us. "Majors are looking for melodic and mellow pop, hip-hop or EDM music... preferably in Italian." There is, however, a small market for punk rock in Italy. "Milan is a pretty posh place where DJ sets win and hip-hop is the main underground genre. Outside of Milan though, it is a different story. Our genre is stronger than people might think, especially around Parma, Bologna and Vicenza/Venezia. The punk scene is full of interesting artists here. Unfortunately, it never reaches the major labels though."

Trash'n'Clean recently released a single titled "Razorblade" which was initially a draft written by bassist Marchino after joking with singer Fabio about making a song about... well... shaving genitals. It was immediately taken seriously and became one of their favorite tracks. You can listen to it below.

All of Trash'n'Clean's music can be found on Spotify, iTunes, and other digital stores. Their YouTube channel is full of interesting live and acoustic sets, they encourage you to go check them out. "Stuff is about to get real serious," they said. "We need you to be tuned."

Gunnar's Top-Ten Punk Songs

It’s another top ten list for you people to argue about.

With all the new music coming out, I, your Maine punk Gunnar thought I would give you what I think are the best ‘punk’ songs to come out year. Please send me hateful emails about the fact that I left off all sorts of bands from your hometown, and send me their music (but really). Send em’ here: gunnar.@crowdsurfcentral.com.

1.Green Day: Bang Bang

Okay, so this one might be a bit of a personal bias but honestly the kings of modern punk music have put out a new single, with an album coming out October 7th and they rocked it. This song was a much needed rebirth for the band after the three albums at once Uno, Dos and Tre (and I don’t care what you say, some of those songs were actually good and you know it). The song itself is a fast angry song that reminds me of the the Green Day of old  something reminiscent of Insomniac or Dookie both of which were, and in fact still are, fantastic. Made putting this new song at the top an easy choice. The album if it follows suit with this is absolutely going to blow people away, and we all know we want them to tour.

2. The Interrupters: She Got Arrested

The Interrupters just released Say It Out Loud, which absolutely rocks, and the messages on the album could not be better. This song (She Got Arrested) is about a woman shooting her abusive husband, and not giving a fuck about the consequences. Talk about a woman standing up for herself. Did we mention they were a female fronted band? But you probably knew that. This album kicks ass. With some catchy tunes that are great to sing along to and if you want to sing along with them you can! Catch them on their tour with Bad Cop, Bad Cop, they’ll be in Alston at the Brighton Music Hall November 1st.

3.PUP: ‘DVP’
PUP has gotten a lot of love from us at Crowdsurf Central, especially after the new album, The Dream is Over. The album is fast and thrashy, probably one of the best albums I’ve ever heard, and is encapsulated in the song, DVP. A fast song about a man who drinks far too much. This song really just makes you want to jump around and see PUP perform, which is great, because they tour all the time.  They’ll be in Cambridge Mass on October 21st.

4.NOFX: ‘6 years on dope’

NOFX always puts out solid material and this was no exception. They have a new album coming out, and the single off it was a hard hitting one about addiction. It’s an amazing sound and if the rest of the album is anything like this, oh boy are we in for a treat. With Fat Mike’s musical and the book, NOFX: The Hepatitis Bathtub and Other Stories, we wonder what can’t they do? They don’t have any shows on the east coast in the near future, but make sure to keep your eyes peeled!

5.Sum 41: ‘Fake My Own Death’

Okay, so it’s the long hoped for return of Sum 41! I was nervous when I first heard the new song. It’s less like their earlier stuff, but it still absolutely rocks. With Derek out of rehab, and finally healthy this album is going to be powerful. Catch Sum 41 in Boston at the House of Blues on October 11th.

6.Direct Hit!: ‘Was It The Acid’

Direct Hit! put out their new album, Wasted Mind, and wow was it amazing. Just a great song to jam out to, a clear punk rock essence. I don’t have much else to say about the song itself, but make sure to catch Direct Hit! if you get the opportunity. They are only touring on the West Coast right now, but we hope they’ll make their way East.

7. Against Me!: ‘333’

Against Me!, simply put, is very good. And this song was no exception to their usual excellence. We love Against Me!, and if you want to see them live you can catch them at Port City Music Hall on September 20th, or, in Boston at the Royale on the 19th.

8. Descendents: ‘Victim of Me’

Alright so I’m going to come clean here and admit that I’ve never been the largest listener of the Descendents but I fell in love with this song. Stunning work, and a great beat. A song that I feel like every skater will put on their Spotify playlists. The song is off their new album Hypercaffium Spazzinate, and if you want to see them catch them at the Royale on October 6th.

9.A Day to Remember: ‘Naivety’

ADTR is making a new album. I was skeptical at first but I actually really enjoyed this song. A bit different than their usual style, it;s a fast pace song, that truly sounds like a punk rock anthem. We here at Crowdsurf Central are looking forward to seeing the rest of the album. You can catch ADTR on tour with Blink 182, in Bangor, Maine on September 3rd.

10. The Menzingers: ‘Lookers’

The Menzingers never fail to surprise me, which I’ve always enjoyed. This song is a bit slower, which is completely fine. This is your typical late night drive punk rock song for when you need to clear your mind. They sing that Jersey girls are total heartbreakers, but we all know that New England girls are the real heartbreakers. If you need to see these guys live (would highly recommend it, great live show) you can see them when they inevitably come back to the East Coast.

Honorable  mentions:

  • Chunk! No, Captain Chunk! 'Blame It On This Song'
  • The Bouncing Souls: 'Up To Us'
  • Jeff Rosenstock: 'Festival Song'

The Mahones - The Very Best: 25 Years of Irish Punk

Irish punk rock legends The Mahones are set to release 'The Very Best: 25 Years of Irish Punk,' a compilation of their greatest hits from the last 25 years - in which they have inspired countless musicians. We had the chance to talk with Finny McConnell about the album, The Mahones appearance at The George Street Festival in St. John's, Newfoundland, Canada, and everything in-between.

Crowdsurf Central: You recently recorded a new version of "Ghost of a Whiskey Devil," what can you tell me about the song?

Finny McConnell: Ghost Of A Whiskey Devil is a very special song for me. I wrote it about my late and dear friend Barry Williams. He was pretty much my musical mentor as a kid. He got me into all of the best Irish artists and bands like Thin Lizzy, Rory Gallagher, The Undertones, Horslips and Stiff Little Fingers etc. He loved Irish music, and he was from Dublin like me. He played in many bands and I met him while his was playing with a band in my parents' Irish bar called Muldoon's, and from then, went on to become life long friends.

It was Barry who convinced me to form The Mahones for a one-off St. Patrick's Day show (he played drums) in his Irish pub in Kingston, Canada called The Toucan. The gig went over so well that here we are 25 years later. I miss him all the time and think of him pretty much every day, so I wrote this song as a tribute to him. He passed away about 10 years ago back home in Ireland. His son, Kevan Williams, played bass with The Mahones from time to time, and is a dear friend. I love singing this song and remembering all of the great times we had together.

Crowdsurf Central: What went into selecting the tracks for "The Very Best: 25 Years Of Irish Punk?"

Finny: We pretty much went with the songs we were performing live on The Hunger & The Fight world tour (2014 / 2015). We did mainly fan favourites and a few new songs on that tour, so when we finished the tour in December 2015, we went straight into Telejet Recording Studio in Toronto and recorded about 40 songs (there is another acoustic best of album coming out next year). We were so tight from touring that most of these songs were recorded on the first take. I really love these new versions. I think I may even like them better than the originals!

Crowdsurf Central: How does it feel to know that you inspired a generation of new Irish punk rockers?

Finny: Absolutely honoured. Anytime anyone says that they're influenced by The Mahones, I'm grateful and humbled. When we started, there wasn't very much out there at the time as far as the genre goes - I remember that there were The Pogues, The Waterboys, Black 47 and The Rogues March in 1990. We were kind of pioneering the new Irish punk scene and I do remember the "Celtic scene" and "Irish folk scene" not liking us very much, but that just drove us to work even harder and take Irish music in a new and more punk direction. I think we achieved that and now I see there are hundreds of Irish punk or Folk punk bands all over the world these days, and it's wonderful. They even have new names for Irish punk now like folk punk, speed folk, and Celtic punk. It was very difficult to get gigs in the early days, but now the phone is always ringing, so I guess we did a good job.

Crowdsurf Central: You said The Ramones self-titled album was the best punk rock album ever. Why?

Finny: It really is the best punk album, as far as I'm concerned. The way they sang, played guitar, bass and drums was just so fast, so easy, and yet so perfect. You could learn how to play like that and you could learn how to write songs like that. It wasn't very hard, and it made you feel like you could do it too. They had the image and sound down perfectly. The first song on that album (Blitzkrieg Bop) is still one of the best punk songs of all time. Pure perfection by four punks from Queens, New York. I just love it! They've have always been a huge influence on me and The Mahones. Notice how close our names are...

Crowdsurf Central: Does it feel like it's been 25 years?

Finny: Not at all. Time flies when you're having fun! Playing in The Mahones is a dream job: I get to make records, tour the world, and I get to play guitar everyday. My talented and beautiful wife Katie Kaboom has been in the band for the past ten years, so we get to be together. I owe it all to our amazing fans and friends that have supported us for over 25 years! Here's to the next 25!

Crowdsurf Central: What are some of your best memories from the past 25 years?

Finny: There are so many stories that I am starting to forget some of them. I really need to write a book soon and document all of this stuff. We are actually making a Mahones documentary with a production company from Calgary, Alberta right, it's currently in the planning stages.

Hanging out with Shane MacGowan, Lemmy, Joe Strummer and Jake Burns are times I will never forget. Touring with Stiff Little Fingers and Dropkick Murphys was amazing. Playing huge festival all over the world to crowds from 5000 to 50,000 is a dream come true, and the list goes on and on. Writing The Mahones' magnum opus The Hunger & The Fight with my wife Katie Kaboom is my greatest achievement so far. I am very proud of that album. Having our song Paint The Town Red in The Fighter was a dream come true. Who would have thought they'd called us?! 15 albums and countless tours - it's what I always dreamed of doing, and now it's what I do. I am very lucky and I feel very blessed.

Oh yeah, here's a fun story: I met Marilyn Manson with my kid a few weeks ago in Toronto, and I said "God Bless" to him as I was leaving and shaking his hand. He looked at me with a really funny look on his face, and that's when I realized I had just blessed the dark lord himself! This is how us Irish say good-bye and we don't even think about it. Anyways, he burned a bible onstage at the show shorty after our meeting! Ha!

Crowdsurf Central: How was/are you looking forward to The George Street Festival in St. John's, Newfoundland?

Finny: The George Street Festival in St. John's, Newfoundland Canada was amazing. It is and will always be one of Canada's best festivals. George Street is like Bourbon Street in New Orleans. It's all bars from top to bottom, and it's a non stop party. Newfoundlanders are some of the best people in Canada, and the world. They're unbelievably kind, and they love to party. We've done this festival twice now, and I can't wait to do it again. I would say, hands down one of the best festivals in the world!

Crowdsurf Central: What are you looking forward to most about the Irish Punk Brigade Tour?

Finny: I'm looking forward to playing some shows again and getting back onstage again. It's been a long time, and The Mahones haven't toured since last year. We took some time off to work in the studio, and get some long overdue rest from a few years of relentless touring. Things really took off when we did The Black Irish album,  so we kept touring and recording to ride that wave of success. By the time we finished The Hunger & The Fight world tour, we were all exhausted and had various injuries from all the gigs and road work. Katie had to have five different surgeries this year, and has to take it easy for awhile, so we have stayed off the road. I think we've only done about 7 gigs this year, and Katie's only done about half of them. She won't be able to tour full time again until she is 100% healed, so we will only be doing a few short tours without her. She's getting better now, she is doing a few upcoming shows, and she'll be back full time by next year.

On the bright side, we now have Scruffy Wallace (he played with Dropkick Murphys from 2003-2015) back in the band, so that is very exciting for both us and the fans. The Mahones have never sounded better. Wait until you see the full line up together! We're pretty stoked for the upcoming year!

Punk Isn't Dead

There is a lot of new punk rock coming out right now.  Sum 41, Green Day, Chunk! No Captain Chunk! to Against Me! and The Interrupters. For a genre that was supposed to be dead according to SLC Punk 2, we are seeing  lot of new material from bands who have been around for a while. This is good for fans, and for the bands, but what does it say for the state of America? Is punk going take over like the late 90’s and early 2000’s? Or is the current state of America being trumped (ha!) with fear so our heroes are coming out with material to remind us that it’s not so bad?

Regardless the reason, the music we all secretly love is creeping back into the mainstream, knocking rappers like Drake from the top of the charts. It’s a good time to be a punk fan because the music brings people together, it touts itself as the genre that doesn't give a fuck who you are, what color your skin is, or what religion you choose to follow. Truth be told, the world could use a lot more unity, especially the United States.

We have a lot of questions, but at least we’ll have fresh new music to listen to (even if some of us aren’t too fond of the new material from Good Charlotte and Blink 182) to keep us from losing it until we have those answers. If you need to lose it and unwind, go to a show! Even if it’s just a local show.  There are a lot of opportunities coming up in the next few months. Blink 182, Sum 41, Less than Jake, Against Me!, The Interrupters, Roam, State Champs, Broadside, Like Pacific, and the supergroup Prophets of Rage are all touring this fall. Rumors of a Green Day tour are also floating around so keep your fingers crossed.  Your wallet and your ears may hurt but we would say it’s worth it.

Make sure to look for exclusives and interviews from Crowdsurf Central. Until next time, listen to punk rock and mosh on.

KISSING CANDICE DEBUT NEW TRACK ‘TAKEN’ Playing Now at Bloody Disgusting

KISSING CANDICE are debuting a brand new song today via Bloody Disgusting. “’Taken’ represents a new era of KISSING CANDICE,” declares bassist Grippo. “We went into the studio with open minds and a blank slate, leaving everything at the door. ‘Taken’ is the song we have wanted to write.” Guitarist Dreamer adds that the track is "an emotional introspective of the psyche when the most important footholds in life are taken away from you, whether by force or other means.”

After performing on the main stage at this year’s Gathering Of The Juggalos, KISSING CANDICE are preparing to bring their newly produced, macabre stage show to the masses this fall, including the Rock And Shock Festival in Worcester, MA on October 15th. Following national tours such as the “Back To Hell Tour” with Twiztid and Davey Suicide, the Rockstar Energy Drink Mayhem Festival, Aiden’s US farewell tour and recently on the “Hellavated” tour with Scare Don’t Fear, vocalist Joey Simpson promises “This is some of the bands best work yet, and we can’t wait to play ‘Taken’ live and unleash our new ultra-violence upon you!” More tour dates will be announced soon.
