Like Pacific, Broadside Tour Announced

Earlier this week it was announced that Like Pacific and Broadside will head out on a month-long tour together. Joining them will be fellow Canadians Rarity, who earlier this year released their debut LP, and Boston Manor. A local band will open each show.

Both bands are coming off enormous success on Vans Warped Tour which saw them consistently draw larger and larger crowds to the Full Sail Stage with Broadside sometimes being bumped up to bigger stages to accommodate for the large crowds. It is also well known that the bands share a true bro-mance, the kind you write books about, and we could not be more excited for the tour to stop in town on October 12th. Rumor has it that the venue might even be changed if the demand for tickets is high enough. You can expect (in our opinion) to see Broadside and Like Pacific contend for the "Breakthrough Artist" award at next year's Alternative Press Music Awards. You can find a full list of dates below.

Keep Flying

We talked with Henry Menzel, guitarist and vocalist of Keep Flying, formerly of Survey Says! and proud supporter of Pokemon Go's Team Instinct. "The true underdogs of Pokemon Go," he said excitedly.

Crowdsurf Central: How did Survey Says! end and Keep Flying form?

Keep Flying: Life in Survay Says! started becoming more and more difficult. I found it very hard to keep us all happy and satisfied with what we were doing. Even the successes were overshadowed by too much negativity amongst each other and the "scene", for lack of a better term. It was taking alot out me and hardening my heart to continue the way things were going. D.Jay and I thought it best to put Survay Says! to rest and begin anew. It was a decision not made lightly. I fought it alot, bounced back and forth as to whether I really wanted to do it. Now that we've made the change in our lives, we both feel much better about the prospect of continuing to tour and be musicians. I'm excited again. I feel alive again. It's wonderful.

Crowdsurf Central: Who are some of your musical influences?

Keep Flying: The chief influences are high energy pop punk a la New Found Glory, Set Your Goals, The Wonder Years and like. Having a horn section is coming from our yearn to bring something new to the table where pop punk is concerned and because of each our histories in ska punk. While we are not a ska band, its clear that our checkered past (hah) is ingrained into our newest material.

Crowdsurf Central: What was the writing process like?

Keep Flying: Writing our songs comes in steps. The initial concept comes from either me or D.Jay and we build the skeleton of the structure together. Then we bring the rest of the band in to fill in the gaps that we couldn't think of ourselves. The coolest parts usually develop once we've jammed out the song together for a while. I try to make the process as organic as possible; let ideas come to us instead of forcing the issue.

Crowdsurf Central: You're heading out on tour soon, what are you looking to most?

Keep Flying: The greatest form of validation i have is when i get to play for people. I never feel more whole then when i get to travel and play shows. I've missed that feeling while building Keep Flying. I look forward to all of it. Success, failure, challenges, everything.

Crowdsurf Central: You will be playing at the Four Chord Music Festival 3 in November. What are you looking forward to with that?

Keep Flying: Four Chord is a special event; a truly DIY punk rock music festival brought to the world by a good friend of mine; Rishi Bahl of Eternal Boy. Im mostly looking forward to working with him on it. Last year was amazing. I expect nothing less from this year and I'm honored to be a part of it.

Crowdsurf Central: What's the best part of being in a band?

Keep Flying: The money. It's amazing to have so little money all the time.
I tease. The best part is when the music truly connects with someone. I have a hard time feeling like I'm part of the world. My best way of feeling like I'm part of the human world is by playing music. I buck the world a lot of the time but truth is I need it and want to be a part of it. Playing music is my way in.

Crowdsurf Central: What's next for Keep Flying?

Keep Flying: I don't know. And that's what makes it so exciting.

You can listen to Keep Flying's EP 'Follow Your Nightmare' here.

VICTORY RECORDS RELEASES STATEMENT ON A DAY TO REMEMBER COURT CASE

Chicago, August 12, 2016 - Victory Records has issued a detailed response to a recent article in Kerrang! Magazine referencing the litigation filed against it by the band A Day To Remember. Victory Records is compelled to provide the following information to the public, specifically in response to untrue statements made by band leader Jeremy McKinnon.  Victory did not file this lawsuit, A Day To Remember did so in order to avoid their remaining recording commitments to Victory. In fact, Victory was blindsided by the lawsuit that the band began to surreptitiously prepare as early as 2010.

The core issue in the lawsuit is how many “Albums” A Day To Remember delivered under its agreement with Victory Records. Not once before filing the lawsuit did ADTR claim to Victory or to the public that they had satisfied their 5-Album recording commitment. They never asserted that Victory’s efforts concerning the marketing, promotion and distribution of the albums was anything less than stellar. During the years ADTR considered itself a Victory artist, they never complained about royalties.

Including the recent article in Kerrang!, virtually every press outlet that has covered ADTR’s album releases since 2006 have reported the number of full length studio albums ADTR released in total - this includes the three albums released by Victory (2007’s For Those Who Have Heart, 2009’s Homesick, 2010’s What Separates Me From You), Old Record (a 2008 re-release of a previous ADTR album on Indianola Records as part of a separate agreement), 2013’s Common Courtesy (the “Fifth” album), and now Bad Vibrations (the “Sixth” Album). ADTR’s inherently absurd claim that they delivered 13 “Albums” in the first two years of their agreement with Victory defies common sense, logic and reality.

Victory continued to pay A Day To Remember royalties even after the band filed this lawsuit. Victory ceased paying royalties when ADTR interfered with Victory’s merchandise sales to Hot Topic which was well into the lawsuit. Victory asserted a “Set-off” counterclaim in the lawsuit, which in this situation permits the withholding of payments that may be otherwise due based on ADTR’s material breaches of their agreement - which includes selling merchandise and music via ADTR.com, to other retailers, and refusing to deliver two commitment albums to Victory. As a result of these breaches, Victory sustained damages in the millions of dollars.

In August 2011 (two months after ADTR filed the lawsuit) Victory made its first of many settlement offers to resolve this dispute. They were all rejected by the band. ADTR rejected Victory’s settlement proposals again in 2013 and instead self-released Common Courtesy. This was a very obvious indicator that they never had any intention of settling their lawsuit.

Crowdsurf Central Local Spotlight: Dreamer & Son

We talked with Dreamer & Son frontman Sayak Das after a show in Derry, New Hampshire.

Dreamer & Son is:

  • Sayak Das - Vocals & Guitar
  • Jake Sierzega - Bass
  • Matt Bolton - Guitar
  • Josh Parra - Drums

Crowdsurf Central: Where is everyone from?

Dreamer & Son :Sayak is from Ashburn, VA but grew up in Columbus, OH. Matt (guitars) is from Shreveport, LA. Jake is from Joliet, IL, and Josh is from Muskegon, MI

CSC: How did the band form?

D&S: The band formed originally as my (Sayak) solo project. I asked a few of my friends if they'd play one live show with me for fun and the group stuck. There was a certain chemistry there that none of us had truly felt before. Since then, we established ourselves as a full band and abandoned the solo project, truly becoming Dreamer & Son.

CSC: Who are some of your musical inspirations?

D&S: Our music inspirations range from the Dear Hunter and Gates to Kings of Leon and Tides of Man.

CSC: What music do you have out and where can it be found?

D&S: We released our debut EP "Written Off, Moving On" in April. It can be found at dreamerandson.bandcamp.com, Itunes, Spotify, YouTube, etc. There are also physical copies that will be available with the launch of our website.

CSC: What is your writing process like?

D&S: Considering that this band started off as my solo project, I have been heavily involved with the writing process. As of now, I come up with the "skeleton" of the song and sit down with Matt. He is a recording wiz, so we end up spending hours demoing and bouncing ideas off of each other. Jake and Josh are usually there as well, giving their input for the overall song. We then split up and write our own parts out to the general outline that we agree on. Jake adds a unique and personable flair to the rhythm section, the likes of which I think truly make a difference in the outcome of our song. Josh also has the ability to compose deceptively complex percussive parts, which glue the entire song together. We meet up afterwards and test the song out until we think we have it right.

CSC: What was the recording process like for your latest EP?

D&S: We recorded at VuDu studios in Long Island, New York with Mike Watts and a team of incredibly experienced engineers. We recorded the EP in 5 days, which I previously thought was impossible. Overall, the recording process was an absolute blast.

CSC: Favorite venue?

D&S: The Piranha Bar - Montreal, QC. This place hosted our best show of tour. The sound was amazing, the stage was neat and spacious, the location was prime. Everything about this place was amazing. A close runner up would be the Middle East, solely because we've played our first/biggest shows there.

CSC: Most memorable show?

D&S: This is a three-way tie between our Montreal show, our sold out Middle East Downstairs show opening for The Spill Canvas, or our EP release show at the Middle East upstairs. I already explained the Montreal show, the only thing I didn't mention was how incredibly positive the crowd was. They were eager to be a part of the show. The Middle East downstairs show is memorable as it is our biggest show to date. The whole place was sold out and we played for over 500+ people. Our EP release show is also very memorable as I called up the entire audience on stage with us at the end of Not One Dry Eye to headbang/sing with me, which was an amazing experience.

CSC: Are there plans for a full-length?

D&S: Yes. We are well into the process of writing out the full length.

You can listen to Dreamer & Son's EP 'Written Off, Moving On' here.

Follow their activity on Facebook to stay up to date.

Dreams of Vertigo - Orange County Rock

Dreams of Vertigo, essentially, started with an idea. The idea in question is that recent music just isn't up to par with the high standards of the average music listener.

Watch the music video for "An (Un)Easy Goodbye" below.

Crowdsurf Central: How did the band form?

Dreams of Vertigo: We formed in 2012 as a solo acoustic project. We knew we wanted to make it a full band eventually. In the sense that bands like Secondhand Serenade and Dashboard Confessional started, but more pop punk, alt rock style.  About 6 months later we officially became a full  band.  We wanted to make music for the sole purpose of making music. No genres, just making music we like.

CSC: Southern California must be a flooded market, how do you make yourselves stick out?

DOV: We are fortunate to have built up different connections over the years, and every one in the band has been through the So Cal music scene.  Truly, the only reason we are here is because of the bands and industry people who have believed in us and what we represent and helped us become bigger.

CSC: Tell us more about what inspired you to write "(Un)Easy Goodbye."

DOV: The song was originally written by our bass player Gonz. He wrote the song a couple of years ago, but at the time, wasn't in a band he felt would fit the sound.  He brought it to us and we all loved it.  As a singer, I'm always writing. I was driving to my parents from the gym awhile ago and I saw this guy on a freeway overpass. He was just sitting there ready to jump onto the freeway and commit suicide.  It was such a horrible thing to witness. I could see the defeat on him. He just had no reason to live.  So I decided to write a story about what his life might have been, and how he got to where he was that day.  To many people are plagued by depression and suicide. It's sad, but you don't have to go very far to find someone who either knows someone who committed suicide or attempted to.  We wanted to raise awareness about this topic and show people that they may feel alone, but they are not.

CSC: You're strong advocates of the "anti-pay-to-play" movement. Tell us more.

DOV: We just feel that, with all the bands in Orange County, it's easy for promoters to be lazy. For promoters to not want to do their job and still make a lot of money.  Pay to  play is one of the biggest things that's hurting the music industry.  If you were going into a job interview and your hiring manager said "okay you have the job, when can you pay ME".  You would laugh your ass off and walk out of the room. Why shouldn't it be the same for musicians.  We are spending thousands of dollars on equipment, recording, photos, and thousands of hours writing music and trying to practice that as much as you can.  Why should WE as a musician, pay YOU the booking agent? In today's world, its us against them in so many aspects, and it shouldn't be. A show should be run  as a joint effort. Not a promoter finding 5 bands on Facebook, putting their name on the website, doing no PROMOTING, and then still walking away with a paycheck.  While the band has no way to get to their next city.

CSC: You're headed out soon for the "End of Summer Road Trip Tour" - what are you looking forward to most?

DOV: Playing in towns we have never been to.  We played last year in Fresno in December and it was honestly one of the best shows ever.  It's fun to get out to new places, and play for people who have no clue who you are.  That's the best way to find out who you are as a band.  Play in front a new crowd every day.  Also, we are playing with our friends in The Alienated. They are one of the coolest bands around Orange County.

CSC: What's in your tour survival kit?
DOV: Alcohol, lots of it.  Phone chargers, occassional water, and money for gas and food lol.

CSC: You've got a new EP coming out soon, what can you tell us about it?

DOV: Writing Part Two was an interesting process.  In the past it was like "let's write a EP".  This time, we just got back into the practice room and started jamming. It was a weird time to be in a band for us because we had just lost our lead guitarist Devin. So I know personally.... I wasn't exactly in a good mood every practice, and I felt so lost. I think we all did as a band.  Once Joe came  in though, it lit this huge fire under us.  He inspired us to continue to make music.  We probably wrote around 20 songs for this EP, and our favorite 6 made the cut.  It's called "Reject University Part 2: From Six 2 Midnight" and its fun, it's dark, it's melodic and diverse.  We have done things on this record we have never tried before.  That all is because we have someone like Joe now who brings out a whole new element to the band.

About Burn It Up:

Fusing elements of alternative rock, reggae, punk and ska, Rochester, NY’s Burn It Up is a band that is hard to classify. The 6-piece’s distinct sound reflects the eclectic musical backgrounds and styles of each band member and their shared influences such as The Police, Sublime, RX Bandits and Goldfinger.

Vocalist Joe Harmon explains, "We spend a lot of time trying to explore the boundaries of what genres like ska, reggae, rock and punk can do, mixing in elements of jazz, funk, and classic and progressive rock. We all have a wide range of tastes and influences, and bring those influences in to the writing process and our performances.”

Formed by members of club favorite Mrs. Skannotto, which went on to release three full-lengths and tour with the likes of Less Than Jake, Mad Caddies, Reel Big Fish, The Toasters, Flatfoot 56, and A Wilhelm Scream, Burn It Up have announced their new album Toys will be released independently on October 14, 2016.

Fans of Mrs. Skannotto will be pleased to know that this new incarnation of the band will pick up where it left off on 2014’s Outlier LP.

"The focus is on tight compositions, and further developing new ground explored on the last album,” says bassist Dan Carter. “The music itself is different. We keep evolving musically."

Burn It Up is:
Joe Harmon - vocals
Mike Frederick - guitars
Dan Carter - bass
Justin Lloyd - trumpet
Evan Dobbins - trombone
Alex Bochetto - drums

Psych-Rockers THE FEM DOMS drop new single

We had the chance to talk with NYC based psych-rockers The Fem Doms about their recent tour, EP, upcoming full-length and single "Dropped."

“Dropped” details the unfortunate situation of losing friends to drugs, and watching from afar as they descend into their demons. The Fem Doms are gearing up to drop the brand new EP this Summer and another full-length album in the Fall. The band are in the works of planning another tour this Summer. A Note Two Self gave them some love, saying “Chris’s vocals are reminiscent of Robert Plant.” The Fem Doms will be celebrating the release of their latest EP Attic with a slew of shows.

Listen to "Dropped" here.

Crowdsurf Central: How was your tour? (July 13-17)

Fem Doms: This tour was probably our favorite yet. We have a great group of people that get along well and like playing together.

CSC: What was the highlight of the tour?

FD: We had a couple days off in the middle and stayed in San Pedro and then went and played the best show of the tour in Ashland, Oregon. People really embraced us there and we had a blast.

CSC: Where was Attic recorded?

FD: Attic was recorded at Speaker Sonic studio in Brooklyn, NY.

CSC: What was the writing & recording process like?

FD: We tend to front load lots of ideas and whittle away at songs over time. There were pretty developed ideas and songs that changed once we got to recording.

CSC: How have people been responding to the EP?

FD: So far we've released the first single off the EP, "Dropped" and people have been dancing to it a lot at shows.

CSC: How is the full-length coming?

FD: We're about half way through the record and we're itching to finish it so that people can hear what we've been doing.

CSC: What can we expect with the new album?

FD: As of right now we're pretty excited about how it's turning out; it's darker than the first record but also has a different identity and tone to it from the EP we're releasing.

Set Your Goals Announce Mutiny! 10th Anniversary Shows and Vinyl Reissue

Melodic hardcore six piece Set Your Goals has announced that they will be celebrating the 10th anniversary of their critically acclaimed debut album Mutiny! with a series of special anniversary shows this December. The east coast shows, taking place in Boston, Philadelphia, and New York City, will feature Misser as direct support, as well as Like Pacific, Can't Swim, and Search Party (Zac Eisenstein from Man Overboard). Tickets go on sale next Tuesday, August 9th at 11am EST, and can be purchased, here: setyourgoalsband.com.

Vocalist Jordan Brown shares: "Hey guys! As you know, SYG is back in action. We took three years off to collect ourselves. Weren't sure if we'd ever get back together, but we did it. It just felt right. It was a big part of our lives.

We are excited to be booking these Mutiny! shows, where we will play the album in full, plus another list of songs from our other releases."

In addition to the upcoming shows, the band will be honoring Mutiny! with a fresh 10th anniversary reissue in 4 limited variants and special, newly-envisioned cover art. The vinyl reissue will be released September 30th via SmartPunk, and can be pre-ordered starting next Tuesday, August 9th.

Mutiny! was originally released on July 11, 2006. It was the band's first full-length album, and it ignited a shift in momentum for not only Set Your Goals, but also the genre the band prescribed itself to. The album's eleven songs nodded respectfully to the band's predecessors while championing a fresh, unique perspective. It captivated listeners and critics alike, and ushered in a new wave of pop punk where Set Your Goals' influence can still be regularly heard.

Set Your Goals' Mutiny!-era line-up - Jordan Brown (vocals), Matt Wilson (vocals), Joe Saucedo (bass), Audelio Flores (guitar), Daniel Coddaire (guitar), and Mike Ambrose (drums) - plan to pick up on the momentum they created in 2006 via these special Mutiny! anniversary shows, reinvigorating the electricity it spawned. During a time where many attempt to recapture the spark that was once there, the air around Set Your Goals is still certainly charged and tingling.

How Spotify and Apple Music are Killing the Industry

Spotify had 30 million monthly customers in March 2016 and most recent numbers show Apple Music with 13 million subscribers as of August of this year. A basic monthly subscription is $10.00 which comes to about $300 million each month for Spotify ($3,600,000,000/year) and $130 million each month for Apple Music ($1,560,000,000/year). The average pay out is per stream is estimated around $0.0084 per play. (Less than $0.01, can you believe that shit?) I've always sucked at math but I'll give it a shot. To make it easy we will say the average number of songs on a record is 10 tracks. Assuming the average length of a song is three minutes the album is thirty minutes long, you would have to listen to one album nearly 1,190 times before paying the average $10 for the album.  To put that in perspective listening to that album 1,190 times comes out to a total of 35,700 minutes, which means you would have to listen to the album on repeat for 25 consecutive days for the band to earn your $10. Moral of the story? Buy physical music. Buy digital albums. Go to shows. Record companies don't give a damn about streams, they care about actual album sales, most importantly first week album sales.

Listen to Davey of Vanna talk about the subject:

And if you missed the news earlier this year, Apple is planning to remove downloads from iTunes and force users to stream their music. Read it all here.

ISLANDER STREAMING NEW ALBUM WITH ALTERNATIVE PRESS - Power Under Control Tour Adds New Dates

Alternative Press are streaming the new ISLANDER album Power Under Control, a day before its release. “I've never been so honored to be a part of music,” confesses frontman Mikey Carvajal. “I truly believe this is the album that the world needs right now. The youth are tired of bands not writing their own songs and they are tired of no one speaking up for what's really going on. Rock and roll is supposed to be dangerous, and Power Under Control is far from safe.”

Steam the new ISLANDER album here.

The Power Under Control Tour continues tonight including dates with We Came As Romans and festival appearances at High Elevation in Denver, Texas Mutiny in Ft. Worth and more to be announced soon.

Founding ISLANDER member and vocalist Mikey Carvajal was joined by Love And Death/Korn wunderkind guitarist J.R. Bareis in 2015, leading the band on a powerful new path. The seeds of this relationship were planted during 2014’s Rockstar Energy Drink Mayhem Fest, when word of ISLANDER’s explosive performances quickly spread to the tour’s headliners Avenged Sevenfold and Korn - who flocked to watch the band almost daily. Bareis, who was then guitar tech for Korn’s Brian “Head” Welch, soon found himself in the role as ISLANDER’s new guitar player. Shortly thereafter, ISLANDER recruited bassist Zeke Vasquez (ex-ForeverAtLast), and after  a couple revolving seats behind the drum throne, newly exited Avenged Sevenfold skinsman Arin Ilejay became a permanent fixture snapping sticks and cymbals behind the kit.

Rolling Stone premiered “Darkness,” the first video from Power Under Control, Loudwire premiered the follow up video for “Bad Guy,” and the latest lyric video premiered with Metal Sucks for the HR (Bad Brains) collaboration “Think It Over.”
